DATA-SHEET HOLDER FOB COMPUTING MACHINES AND THE LIKE.
appnemon mea January 2s, 192s. semi No., sasso.
My invention relates to computing machines and the like generally, and more particularly to a data sheet holding means for such machines, especially sheets for use in computing taxes, total prices of lumber in quantities, charges for water in cities where water is sold by the gallon, prices of milk and cream at any given rate per gallon, and for such other uses that will suggest themselves from the foregoing.
The general object of my invention is tov provide a sheet holding means ofthe class set forth that will eifectively and efliciently support a data sheet in position and easily and readily release the same therefrom as desired or necessary, and which will allow for the employment of sheets of relatively great area, so that a wide range of computations may be obtained from the data displayed thereon.
The manner and means whereby the above and other objects are attained will clearly appear from the specific description of one embodiment of the invention.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a computing machine embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vert-ical section of said machine;
Figure 3 is a cross section in a plane indicated by the line 3 3, Figure 2;
drum which carries a sheet bearing the Atable of computations;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the means for clamping the sheet, bearing the table, in
position on the drum;
Figure 6 is a view in the plane indicated by the line 6 6, Figure 4, the view being partly in elevation and partly in section and showing the clamps for holding the sheet on the drum;
Figure 7 is a detail on the line 7-7, Figure 1, showing the detachable engagement of the numbered plates with the keepers at the ends of said plates;
Figure 8 represents a fragment o f one example of a chart or sheet contemplated for use with the holder structure.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, a cylinder 10 is in practice provided with supporting Figure 4 is a perspective view of the inner legs 11. )n the front of the cylinder are' spaced strips 12 usually of metal, the upper one bearing odd numbers, and the lower one even numbers, which may run upward to any extent available, those shown running respectively to 49 and 50 but the length of the st rlps and the number of numerals thereen wlll depend on the size of the machine. Said strips 12 are detachably held at their ends to the cylinder, detachable engagement belng effected in the present instance by keepers 13 beneath which the ends of the strips are entered.
On the ends of the cylinder 10 detachable caps 14 are provided turnably fitted on the en ds of cylinder 10. Each cap 14 is formed with a preferably non-circular hole 15 to fit over a non-circular or angular formation on the reduced ends 16 of the heads 17 provided on the ends of drum 18 adapted to receive a sheet 19 bearing tables, two lines of said tables appearing at a slot 20 formed in the cyllnder 10 between the strips 12 as clearly shown in Figure 1. The screws 21 pass into the reduced ends 16 of heads 17 and overlie the caps 14 to hold said caps tightly on the heads 17, so that with the turning of the caps 14 the heads 17 and the drum 18 will be turned.
A tabulation arranged in longitudinal rows 22 of tables representing amounts of taxes or the like is produced onlthe sheet 19. The longitudinal edges of said sheet are clamped to the drum 18 by clamp strips 23 disposed longitudinally on said drum. Said clamp strips 23 are integral with springs 24, ends 25 of which are inserted in slots 26. The tendency of the springs 24 is to hold the strips 23 in clamping position. At the opposite ends from the secured ends 25 of springs 24, the latter are inturned radially and lie close to each other as at 27 within slots 27 Releasing means is provided for the clamp strips 23 and in the illustrated form said releasing means consists of rods 28 having 100 cams 29 disposed beneath the ends of strips 23. On the ends of the rods 28 are operating members in the form of arms 30 which may be depressed to rock the rods 28 to bring the cams 29 in engagement with the clamp 105 strips 23 for lifting said strips. The numeralson the respective strips 12 represent hundreds or thousands or larger numbers and the table'22 on the sheet 19 comprises the longitudinal lines of computations no of a pair will give the computations of taxes,
` for example, expressed in hundreds or thousands on one strip 12 and the other line of the pair of computations or tabulations will relate to the numerals on the secondl strip 12 considering said numerals as expressing hundreds or thousands, for example.
The outer structure 10 has aI suitable handle 31 for carrying the machine.
I would state furthermore that while the illustrated examples constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention.
AHaving thus described my invention, I
elongated cylindrical body adapted to support a data sheet upon the same, clamping means co-extensive with said body beneath which the opposite ends of the sheet are adapted to be secured, attaching members carried by said clamping means and partially encircling said body, said attaching members being engaged with said body to retain said clamping means in their operative positions, and means for actuating sald clamping means to release the engaged ends of the sheet.
