DECORATIVE FABRIC.
Application filed January 20, 1327. Serial No. 162,329.
This invention relates to decorative fabrics and has particular application to colored or dyed fabrics having the color or dye thereon extracted or removed at certain predetermined parts, sections or areas to impart or give the effect of a lace-like decoration.
In the present instance it is my purpose to provide a decorative cloth fabric which, in appearance, will present a solid colored background, trimmed or ornamented with white lace, this being accomplished, as above indicated, by removing or extracting the coloring matter from the backgroundin accordance with a predetermined lace-like design.
A further object of my invention is to provide a decorative fabric embodying a colored background of a white lace decorative effect in the form of panels, borders, figures or designs located or occupying predetermined positions upon the solid colored background, so
that when the fabric is made up into the desired artlcle, such as a table cover, scarf,
handkerchief, garment or the like, the white lace ornamentation w1ll occupy a selective position to give the appearance of an article of colored cloth trimmed, decorated or ornamented with white lace.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a decorative fabric wherein the white lace simulation having the colored areas or sections thereof extracted at the mill, so that the piece or bolt of goods will have the particular decorative designs located at proper points or places on the goods so that when the cloth is cut according to a selected pattern, as in making an article, the ornamentation or decoration, whether it be in the form of a border, panel, centerpiece, or the like, will occupy the proper position on the completed article.
IVith the above recited objects andothers of similar nature in View, my invention comprises the decorative fabric or article set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a plane view of a decorative cloth or fabric embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing an article. such as a table cloth, embodying my invention.
Referring now to the accompanying draw ings in detail, and particularly to Fig. 1 thereof, the letter A indicates as an entirety,
a section of a piece of cloth or fabric, which white lace-like ornamental effect. Assum-' ing, for example, the sheet A to be intended to be-cut according to a pattern to form a kimono or other light gown, having a lace like collar and short lace-like sleeve trimmings, the white lace like collar effect will be applied at the point B and the White lace-likesleeve trimmings at C. Thisis accomplished by extracting the dark blue coloring matter from the piece of cloth at the points or sections B and C. To do this, the dyed or solid colored piece of goods is passed between suitable rollers upon which are cut or chased the desired lace-like designs. These rollers may be arranged in pairs, one or more, with the cloth passed therebetween. To extract or bleach the solid coloring matter from the cloth at the desired points, the chased or etched rolls'are supplied with a suitable bleaching or extracting agent. For example, a suitable solution of hydrochloric acid may be used for this purpose, the acid being maintained in the form of a bath in which revolves a feeding roll or rollers, and which supplies the acid or bleaching agent, as desired, to the elevated surfaces of the chased or etched design rolls. As the apparatus for extracting or bleaching the colored background. to give the white lace-like design forms no part of the present invention, it need not be described or illustrated here in detail, as it will be readily understood that any suitable apparatus or mechaism may be employed for this purpose, it only being essential that the extracting or bleaching agent shall be applied to the desired points on the fabric and according to the selected or predetermined design.
With the application of such a bleaching agent in the manner described the coloring matter will be removed from the fabric, or the fabric bleached according to the design so that a white lace-like effect at the selected portions or sections of the fabric will appear. In Fig. 1, as before stated, the cloth A is presumed to have a dark colored or dyed background, while the lace-like sections B and C will appear white after the bleaching operation. fter thecloth comes through the bleaching operation it is properly finished and bolted and is ready for use.
In making a garment from the piece offabric shown in Fig. 1, the operator would of course, place a pattern thereon, or mark the desired pattern lines, and then cut the cloth. piece so as to make a garmentform having a lace-like neck ornamentation and lacelike trimmings for the short or kimono sleeves. I
In Fig. 2, I have shown a complete article, such for example, as a table cloth, wherein the colored or sblidbody portion D of the article is provided. with a border or edge trimming E, in simulation ofWhite-lace, this articlebeing made from the fabric prepared as before described.
It will be noted that the bleaching agent will extract the coloring matter to leave the white lace effect on the cloth, this white lace effect being indicated in black lines of course on the drawing. Therefore,'the solid background color of the cloth will show or be exposed betweenthe lattice-like lace effect, so that an exceedingly attractive decorative fabric is the result, the cloth having the appearance of being trimmed or ornamented with white lace, stitched or sewed onto the dark or colored background in such manner that the background will show through the lace.
It will further be understood that any lacelike design or figure may be employed for a wide variety of articles. In addition, the invention is also applicable to marking or ornamenting goods with a solid light colored background. For example, certain linen is watermarked. My invention is applicable to such fabrics, as the white background may be bleached in the manner heretofore described, to give this contrasting effect between two substantially white orlight surf-aces.
\Vhile I have herein shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not contine myself to all the precise details herein set forth by way of illustration, as modification and variation may be made without departing from the spirit or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
'WVhat I claim is:
An article of manufacture comprising a piece of material having upon a portion thereof a colored background giving the appearance of the absence of such material, said colored background provided with a light colored lace-like design formed by extracting predetermined portions of said colored background according to a predetermined design, and adapted to give the appearance of lace attached to said material.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 30th day of December, A. D. 1926.
