BRUSH HOLDER.

My invention relates to brush holders,ot a type suitable for detachably holding brushes, and particularly bottle washer brushes, for use in washing bottles by machinery.

More particularly stated, I seek to produce the brush holder made in halves and provided with passages "for receiving and holding the shanks of a wire brush, the brush holder be;- ing further provided with means for resiliently holding together the two halves, in order to facilitate the mounting of the brush holderin position. My inventionturther contemplates an 1mproved brush holder so formed and arranged as to facilitate the mounting and replacement oi a wire brush, to be held firmly in position during the operation of washing the bottle.

Reference is made to the accompanying drawing termin a. part of this specification, and in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures.

Figure 1 is a cross section through my improved brush holder, and is taken upon the line 11 of Figure 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

A metallic spindle is shown at 5, and 1s provided with a central passage 6 through which water is supplied, these parts being of the usual or any preferred construction.

The spindle 5 is at its upper end provided with an opening 7, of substantially cylindrical form and threaded internally.

The spindle 5 carries a metallic nozzle 6, having the form or" a tube provided with a threaded end portion 9. This threaded end portion serves as a base for the nozzle, and is threaded externally and fitted into an opening with which the spindle 5 is provided.

The bore of the nozzle 8 coincides with the passage 6 of the spindle.

By this arrangement water is readily supplied while the spindle and parts carried thereby are rotating during the washing of a bottle.

A brush is shown at 21, and is made of wire twisted and carrying bristles asshown, the brush being also provided with a pair of stems 22, 23, each made of twisted wire, these stems terminating in a pair of hook- ends 24,25. 7

In addition, the brush holder is provided with two channels 26, 27, each of substantially semi-cylindrical shape so co -related and arranged as to form acylindrical channel, when the two halves are fitted together.

The operation of my device is as follows:

The two halves of the holder are fitted to gether, and the ring 13, which is resilient, is stretched a little and lodged within the channel 12, so as to hold the two halves together.

The operator now forces the two halves slightly apart, and introduces the two stems 22, 23 in the channels for which they are adapted, as shown. This done, the operator simply screws the shank into position within the spindle '5. This leaves the brush firmly mounted upon the top of the'spindle.

Next a bottle to be washedis mounted in a frame for the purpose, the bottom of the bottle being upward. Thespindle, carrying the brush holder and brush is next thrust upwardly through the neck of the bottle, so that the brush is pressed against the bottom of the bottle. The spindle being now rotated and water being'supplied through the passage 5, the interior of the bottle is thoroughly cleaned.

In order to demount the brush, the brush I holder is simply unscrewed, and the two halves or shankslO, 11 are forced slightly apart. This releases the brush, whereupon it may be replaced or supplanted by a new brush, as occasion may require.

As may be noted from the foregoing description, my improved brush holder is of simple construction and not liable to get out of order. It holds the brush firmly in position, and yet readily releases the brush when ever the brush as a whole is removed from the spindle, as above described.

I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown, asvariations may be made therein Without departing from my inven tion, the scope of which is commensurate with my claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent is as follows:

1. A brush holder, comprising a pair of shanks each having the form of a semi-cylinder and provided with channels for holding the shanks of a brush, and a ring of resilient material encirclin said pair of shanks.

2. A brush holder, comprising a spindle provided with an opening and with a water passage, a pair of shanks fitting into said opening and provided with an annular channel, and aring of resilient material located within said channel and encircling said shanks.

3. The combination of a spindle provided with a water passage and with an opening, a brush holder having the form of a shank made in halves and detachably fitted into said opening, said brush holder being provided with channels which merge together and form a second passage, a nozzle carried by said spindle and extendingthrough said second passage, and a brush having stems carried by said channels and disposed adjacent said nozzle.

4. A brush holder comprising a spindle provided with a water passage and with an opening, a nozzle carried by said spindle and coinn'iunicating with said water passage, said nozzle extending through said opening, and a pair of shanks mated together and fitted into said opening, said shanks being provided with means for supporting a brush and further provided with channels which form a passage through which said nozzle'extends.
