UNITE STATES JOHN M. EOTHERSALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SEALING MEAN S FOR CONTAINERS.
Application filed August 11,.1924.' Serial No. 731,267.
This invention relates in general to closing means for containers, and has for a primary object the provision of a seal usable, for example, upon a pouring spout, or the end of a collapsible tube, and comprising an integral part of the spout extended over the end of a dispensing opening and severable by means of a knife, or like instrument, when it is desired to use the contents of the container.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a pouring spout provided with sealing means embodying my invention and showing the removable cap in place;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the sealing part severed from the. end of the spout and the cap in separated relationship.
Upon the drawings, which illustrate the best manner in which I have contemplated applying the principlesof my invention, the plying the principles of my invention, the reference character 21 indicates a spout or outlet member which is formed of relatively soft, easily severable material, such as lead, or an amalgamationofmetalsresultinginsoftmetal, and is provided with a dispensing tube, passage or opening 22. The spout, in the present instance, is of tapered form,.the opening, or tube 22 narrowing toward the top and being closed by means of a sealing part 23 which is integral with the spout wall and is extended over the end of the opening. This part is adapted to be severed by means of a knife, or other appropriate instrument, when it is desired to make use of the contents of the container, and it will be apparent that prior to this time a perfect hermetic seal is provided, there being no opportunity for evaporation or leakage of the contents. This is highly important when the container upon which the spout is used is employed for certain grades of oil, or other volatile liquids, and it 1s con templated also that a seal may be advantageously used in connection with collapsible tubes containin a semi-liquid. in which evaporation is tolje particularly avoided.
The upper part of the spout is exterior-1y threaded at 24 and formed with a conical portion 25. between the threads and the sealing part 23. A. cap or closure 26, having internal threads 27, is adapted to fit upon the end of the spout and is provided with an interior shoulder or sealing projection 28, which is brought into tight engagement with the conical part 25 of the spout when the cap is screwed down, thus providing a metallic seal or reclosure preventing evaporation or leakage of the contents after the sealing part 23 has been severed.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoingdescription, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merelya preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A container, comprising an outlet part of soft metal, having a conical portion at the outer end thereof, and a cap adapted to be tightened upon said part, and having an angular shoulder adapted to, be forced into sealing engagement with said conical portion thereof.
2. A container, comprising an outlet part of soft metal, having a conical portion at the outerend thereof terminating in an integral sealing tip of cyclindrical form and severable from said conical portion by a knife or like instrument for opening the container, and a cap adapted ,to 'be tightened upon said part and having a shoulder adapted to be forced into sealing engagement with said conical portion thereof.
3. A lead pouring spout adapted to be opened by cutting, which consists of a lead body formed at its forward end with a conical portion, and with a screw thread, and with a forward-cylindrical extension terminating in a sealing part which is relatively thick and solid, all of said parts being formed in one piece of lead, and a screw threaded cap screwed on the end of the spout and provided with an interior shoulder adapted to bear on the conical surface to close the spout after it has been cut, the spout being openable by and coacting parts on said members, compriscutting across the cylindrical part at the ining a cone on the spout and an angular shoulner side of said thickened sealing part. der on the cap, for producing a biting metal 10 4. A container spout, comprising a screw to metal sealing engagement between said 5 threaded o'utlet member of soft metal and a members when said closure member is fully screw threadedclosure member adapted to enapplied. 7 4 gage the screw threads of said outlet member, JOHN M. HOTHERSALL.
