DISPLAY CARTON.

Application led September 28, 1925. Serial No. 59,050.

My invention relates to cartons usually constructed of heavy paper-board and which are adapted to be used as shipping cartons, and then by certain simple folding operations, as display cartons.

The object of my invention is provide such a carton having the necessary strength to withstand the handling it receives while in transportation, and which may be readily converted into a display carton.

Itis also an object of my invention to provide such a carton which will have ample space for advertising matter, which will be visible when the carton is opened up for display purposes. Other objects and the advantages of my invention will appear when reference is had to the following speciiication,

Referring now to the drawings, my im"- proved carton comprises front and back walls 5 and 6 respectively,'and side walls 7 and 8. Bottom closure aps 9, 10, 11 and 12 are formed integrally with their respective walls and top closure flaps 13, 14, 15 and 16 are likewise formed integrally with their respective walls.

As indicated most clearly in Fig. 3, the top and bottom closure flaps are cut as indicated at 17 and 18 respectivelyto correspond in blank used yinwidth to their respective sides and the blank is slitted as indicated at-19 and 20. The last named slits 19 and 20 are disposed in the front corners of the carton andthe front and side walls are taped together along the said slits as indicated by the V. gummed tapes 22 and 23, this construction being for a purpose which will hereinafter be explained.

rlhe blank is further scored as indicated at 24, 25 and 2G in order to render it easily folded into rectangular shape to form the body or side Walls of the carton. W'hen so formed or folded, the edges 27 and 28 of the blank may be joined together by means of a strip of gummed tape indicated at 29.

determine the top and bottom edges of the scribed is the usual structure for rectangular cartons, with the exception of the slitting indicated at 19 and 20, and taping indicated at 22 and 23, and except that the rear top flap 16 is considerably wider than the front top iap 14. When the carton is folded, the side, top and bottom flaps are first turned inwardly and then the front and back top and bottom flaps are turned inwardly over the aforementioned side flaps, 'and a strip of gummed tape 32, (Fig. 2) may then be placed over the adjacent edges of the two top flaps, and a like strip of tape may be placed over the adjacent edges of the two bottom flaps to seal the carton.

To renderI my carton adaptable for display purposes, I score the front wall along a horizontal line 33 extending between the lower ends of the slits 19 and 20 and preferably located somewhat below the centre of the front wall. The side walls are scored along inclined lines extending upwardly and rearwardly from the ends of the score 33 to the upper rear corners of the side walls', as indicated at 34 and 35. When the carton is t-o be opened to display its contents, the strip of tape 32 is cut to open the top of the carton and the tape strips 22 and 23 on the front corners of the carton are also cut from the top downwardly to the junctures of the score 33 with the scores 34 and 35. done, the rear t'op fia-p 16 may be opened up and left in an upwardly extending position, and the upper portionof-the front wall 5 may be turned outwardly along the score 33 into the position shown in Fig. 1, to form downwardly extending inclined iap 41. The upper portions of the side walls may then be turned outwardly along the scored lines 34 and 35 into the position shown in Fig. 1 to form outwardly extending inclined flaps 42 and 43.

The top closure flaps 13 and 15 may conjacent the respective rear corners of the car-- ton where they may be secured by means of strips of gummed tape as indicated at 38 and 39, (Figs. land 3). The front wall 5 may be maintained in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, by turning the narrow front top flap 14 inwardly, and securing it in this position by means of a strip of gummed tape 40, secured to' it and to the bottom of the Carton as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

I find it is convenient to supply cartons of the above description with fastening tapes secured to the top flaps 13, 14 and 15 as illustrated in Fig. 3, which may be used as above described byr merely moistening the gummed surface, and t hen sticking them to the back walls or bottom, as the case may be,

'when the' carton is opened for display purposes.

While I have 'shown and descrlbed gummed tape strips as a means for fastening the Varlous flaps in display position, it is to be noted y that various other means for fastening may be i employed or the various flaps' may be left unwill be attractively displayed above, in front of and on opposite sides of the goods exposed through the inclined open top portion of the carton.

Instead-ofslitting" the front corners as at 19 and 20, I may simply continue the scores 24 and 25 upwardly the entire height of the sides whereby the strengthaof the carton is not affected to any extent, and which also enables the corners to be quite easily slitted when the box is to be opened fordisplay purposes.

I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts may be made inthe construction of my carton without departing from the essence 'of the invention, and I reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims. "v

I claim as' my invention:

1. A display carton having front, side, and rear walls and top and bottom closure flaps,

said front wall being scored along a substan-- tially horizontal line, and said side wallsbeing scored along upwardly and rearwardly inclined lin es to form the upper portion of the front wall and the upper forward portions of the side walls into flaps that are adapted to be separated and turned outwardly for display purposes. v

2. A display carton having front, side, and

nrear walls, and top and bottom closure flaps extending from said side rwalls, said front Wall being scored on a substantially horizontal line, and saidaside walls being scored along turned downwardly to dispose an edge thereof adjacent the corresponding sides of the carton for fastening purposes.

3. A carton comprising front, side, and rear walls, and top and bottom closure flaps, saidV front wall being scored on a substantially horizontal line, and said side' walls being scored on upwardly and rearwardly inclined lines to form the upper portion of the front wall and the upper forward portions of the .side walls into flaps that are adapted to be turned outwardly for display purposes, and means for maintaining said flaps outturned in inclined position;

4. A carton comprising front, side, and rear walls, and top and bottom closure flaps, said front wall being 'scored on a substantially hdrizontal line, and said side walls being scored along upwardly'and rearwardly i'nclined lines to form flaps adapted to be turned outwardly for display purposes, means for maintaining the front flap so turned, comprising the front top closure flap, and means for attaching said closure flap to the bottom of the carton, and means for maintaining the side flaps so turned, comprising the respective side top closure flaps and Wings formed thereon by means of scoring extending diagonally from the inner edges of the said flaps to the outer edgesthereof, said wings being adapted to be turned downwardly todispose an edge thereof adjacent the corresponding side walls of the carton, and means for fastening said .wings to the side walls of the carton.

5'. A carton comprising front, side, and

rear walls, and the topandbottom closure flaps, said front wall being scored adjacent .the central port-ion thereof along a substantially horizontal line, and said side walls being scored along inclined lines extending upwardly and rearwardly from points adjacent the ends of such horizontal line to the upper edges of the carton to form the upper portion of the front wall and the upper forward portions of the side walls into flaps that are adapted to be outturned for ldisplay purposes.

6. A display carton comprising front, side, and rear walls and top and bottom closure flaps, said front wall being scored in a sub' stantially horizontaFline and said side walls being scored along inclined lines extending upwardly 'and rearwardly frointhe ends of such horizontal line t'o form aps adapted to be turned voutwardly for display pur oses, the front side corners of said carton eing slitted downwardly from the top to a point substantially at the juncture of the. said scoring on saidfront and side walls and the front present the inner displaysurfaces in front v and side walls being taped together along such slits.

7. A display carton comprising front, side, and rear walls and top and bottom closure liaps, said front wall being scored on a substantially horizontal line, and said side walls being scored along upwardly and rearwardly inclined lines'to form flaps adapted to be turned outwardly for display purposes, means for maintaining the front lap so turned comprising the front top closure liap, and a strip of gummed tape secured to said top closure Hap, and adapted to be attached to the bottom of the carton, and Dmeans for maintaining the side flaps so turned comprising the respective side top closure flaps and wings formed thereon by means of scoring extending diagonally from the inner edges thereof to the outer edges thereof, said wings being adapted to be turned downwardly to dispose an edge thereof adjacent the walls of the carton, and a strip of gummed tape secured to the said wings, and adapted to be attached to the walls of the carton.

8. A display carton comprising a tubular box body formed of front, rear and side walls and pairs of top and bottom closure flaps, said front wall being horizontally scored and said side walls scored along upwardly and rearwardly inclined lines, the upper portions of said front and side walls above said scores being adapted to be separated and out-turned into display fiaps, the inner surfaces of said portions and of the top rear closure flap becarton through the inclined top opening and and on opposite sides of and above such opening, substantiall as described.

9. A display carton having front, rear and side walls, and top and bottom closure flaps, said front wall being scored adjacent the central portion thereof along a substantially horizontal line and said side Walls being scored along inclined lines extending up-l wardly and rearwardly from points adjacent the ends of said horizontal line' to the upper edges of the carton, to permit the upper p01'- tion of the front wall and the upward forward portions of the side walls to be outturned` when separated, and means connecting the adjacent edges of said portions adapted to be severed to permit the outturning thereof for display purposes, substantially as described.

A display carton comprising a tubular, collapsible box body formed of front, rear and side walls having hinge connections at the vertical corners of the box body and pairs of top andbottom closure iiaps hinged to said walls, said front wall being horizontally scored and said side walls scored along upwardly and rearwardly inclined lines to enable the upper portion of the front wall and the upper forward portions of the sidewalls to be outturned into display aps when thel hinge connections between them are severed and thereby expose the contents of the carton through an inclined top opening and expose lthe inner surfaces of said flaps in front and on opposite sides of such opening, substantially as described.
