BEDPAN.
Application led April 12,
The object of this invention is to provide a bed pan, of vsimple and rugged construction, which shall be more sanitary and more convenient than bed pans heretofore in use.
It is an object of this invention to provide a bed pan, preferably having an extensive and substantially rectangular yflat bottom (hereinafter referred to as a main bottom) with a partial cover which is upwardly rounded in a manner favoiable to an interiitting of the same between the legs of a user; and, in preferred embodiments of my invention, all -parts being preferably formed from sheet metal and suitablyfenameled or otherwise coated, the said bottom may terminate, at one end, in a iiat member interposed between the mentioned'main bottom and the mentioned partial cover and adapted to lserve as an alternative bot-tom,-upon which the bed pan may temporarily rest, in an upright position, after it has been used and removed from a bed. 4 lt is a further object of my invention to provide a bed pan from which the contents, regardless of their consistency, can be con-v veniently and Completely removed; and, in preferred embodimentsrof my invention, the mentioned main bottom may be provided, at the end opposite from the mentioned alternative bottom, with a transverse roll, preferably intergral with said bottom and extending entirely -aoross the said bed pan,-either the mentionedpaitial cover or the Vmentioned transverse rollbeing employed as a pouring-edgefin the emptying of said pan.
VThe mentioned partial cover beingflongitudinally rounded, in amanner adapting the legs of the user to overlie the same, and preferably so out away as to produce'a substantially semi-circular outline, as viewed in plan, a central portion of the mentioned rounded edge may be adapted to serve as a spout or partial-width pouring edge, suitable for use in case the contents must be delivered' into a comparatively small opening; andthe mentioned transverse roll may be adapted to serve not only asa body rest,
during theuse of the lbed pan, and as full widthpouring edge, enabling the bed pan to be conveniently and completely emptied, rinsed and inspected, but also as an integral handle,-a recurvedl portion of said trans-'- verse roll being conveniently engageable by` the fingers. This integralhandle is favorable to the removal of the bed pan from a,

of an illustrative embodiment of my inven,
tion, taken in connection with the appended claims and the accompanying drawings, in
. which line 3 3 of Fig. 2. f
Fig. 4 is a perspective view, showing rone ofmy bed pans as standing uprightupon a .flat end which is` adapted to serve asan alternative bottom,-one corner being broken away; and Fig. 5, resembling 2, shows an alternative. Y y
Referring to the details of that specific embodiment of my invention chosen for purposes of illustration, each of my bed pans may comprise a substantially flat main bottom 11, upon which it may rest during use, and substantially fiat sides 12. Between these sides may extend a longitudinally roundedmember 13, adapted to interiit between the legs of a user and to serve as a partial coverfor the bed pan, during use,-
this element beingvr shown as provided not only` with a centralcorrugation or wave 14 but with a rounded edge 15, which may bev substantially semi-circular, as viewed in plan.
At one end of the bottom 11, l show a sub- Vstantially flaty member 16 as `constituting a complete closure, interfitting between the mentioned bottom, sides and partial cover; and, at the oppositeend of the bottom 11, I prefer to provide a transverse roll 17, integral with the said bottom and 'interposed between said sides. lf desired, portion of this roll, shown in Fig. 2 as rising no quite to the level of the upper edges ofthe sides 12, may beslightly flattened, as suggestedat 18; but, inany event, this roll is intended Vnot only to be engageable, without discomfort, by the body Vof the user, and to provide. anend wall vfor the pan', but also to serve as a full-Width pouring edge, over which the contents may be completely removed.; and I consider it highly desirable to so eXtend and recurve this end roll V(as best shown in Fig. 2) as to constitute the same an integral handle,-the edge 19 thereof being conveniently engageable by the lingers in the removal of the bed pan from a bed and in the disposition of the same at a bedside, in an upright position such as that illustrated in Fig. el.
Itv will be seen from the foregoing that the member 16 is adapted to serve not only as an end closure, during the use of a bed pan embodying my invention, but an alternative bottom, upon which the bed pan may stand subsequent to its use. The longitudinal rounding of the'partial cover 13 (this partial cover being shown as provided with fiat areas upon Which the legs of the user may rest, With the mentioned Wave 14 therebetween) and also the semi-circular curvature of the rounded edges 15 are favorable to the use of the central portion of said edge as a spout or partial-Width pouring edge, in the emptying of. my bed pan.
I emphasize not only the convenience of use of mybed pan, danger of splashing being obviated by the shape of the partial Acover 11i, and the facility With which the same may be emptied either over the' edge 15 or over the transverse roll 17, and the ease and completeness With which the interior may be rinsed and/or scoured and/or inspected, but the very great advantage in providing the described integral handle, so disposed that a patient may conveniently loiver the bed pan to a floor, leaving the same in an upright but safe position pending further attention by a nurse or other attendant; and the mentioned handle then serves not only to enable the nurse or attendant to remove the bed pan With one hand, carrying the saine ink a dependent manner,
but conveniently to empty, rinse and stow the same, in readiness for subsequent use.
Although I have above 'described a single complete embodiment of my invention, it should `be understood not only that various features of my invention might be independently employed but also that numerous modications, aside from mere changes in proportions, appearance or size, might easily be devised by Workers skilled in the arts to Which this case relates, 'Without involving the slightest departure from the spirit and scope ef my invention, as the same is indicated labove and in the following claims.
For example, as shown in Fig. 5, in order to cause any contentsk to lovv toward the al-v ternative bottom 16, I may give the main bottom 11 a yslight-rearward inclination,
and, in this case, the sides 12 may-'or may notextend below the bottom l1', in such manner' as to cooperate with the edge 19inA supporting the pan and in preventing lateral slippage thereof. y
l I claim as my invention:
1. A bed pan Which is substantially rectangular in plan outline, said bed pan comprising: a main bottom, upon Which it may rest during use; an end Wall Which is adapted to serve as an alternative bottom, When said bed pan is shifted to an upright position; and additional \valls,-said main bottoni being provided, at the end opposite said alternative bottom, Withl a transverse roll forming ahandle.
2. A bed pan comprising: substantially flat sides connected by a longitudinally rounded member Which is adapted to serve 'as a partial cover; and a substantially flat 'and With a substantially semi-circular edge,
as viewed in plan. A
4:. A bed pan comprising: Asubstantially flat sides connected by a longitudinally `rounded member Which is adapted to serve ask a partial cover; a substantially flat main bottom terminating at one end in a transverse roll forming a handle and at its opposite end in a member which is adapted to serve as an alternative bottom,-said rounded member being shaped to interflt between the legs of the user. 5. A bed pan'comprising: substantially flat sides connected by a longitudinally rounded member which is adapted to serve as a partial cover; a'substa'ntially flat main bottom terminating at'one end in a transverse roll forming a handle and at its opposite end in a member which is adapted to serve as an alternative bottom,-s aid longitudinally rounded member being so shaped as to provide a. partial-Width pouring edge or spout. 6. A bed pan comprising: substantially rposite end in a member which is adapted to serve as an alternative bottom,-said transverse roll being continuous with said bottom. 7. A bed panl comprising substantially fiat sides connected by va longitudinally rounded member which is adapted to serve as a partial cover; a substantially flat main bottom terminating at one end in a transverse roll forming a handle and at lits opposite end in a member which is ,adapted to serve as an alternative bottom,-said transverse roll constituting an end of Wall of said bed pan When in a substantially horizontal position of use.
S. A bed pan comprising: substantially flat sides connected by a longitudinally rounded member, adapted to serve as a partial cover; a substantially flat main bottom terminating at one end in a transverse roll formingr a handle and at its opposite end in a member Which is adapted to serve as an alternative bottom,-said transverse roll being adapted to serve as a full Width-pouring edge in the emptying ofsaid bed pan.
9. A bed pan comprising: substantially flaty sides connected by a longitudinally rounded member, adapted to serve as a partial cover; a substantially flat main bottom terminating at one end in a transverse roll and at its opposite end in a member Which is adapted to serve as an alternative bottom-'said transverse roll Comprising an integral handle for said bed pan.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 6th day of April, 1927.
