Assuming that the nipple is attached to a part to be lubricated, and held rigid by such attachment, the coupling end of the nozzle may be slipped over the nipple until the end of the nipple bears against the sealing washer 18. The triangular portion fits into the coupling part 13 and prevents rotation between it and the nipple, and also the sealing and valve parts 16 and 19, as shown in Fig. 1. If now the barrel 1 be turned in a clockwise direction, the nozzle 3 will be turned relative to the parts held against rotation. As the pins 20, 20 are held against rotation, because the valve part 19cannot turn, the slots 21, 21 will move relative to the pins.
- the first movement Will occur between the straight portions of the slots and the'pins and this provides the coupling operation, because the shoulders 12 turn and engage behind the projections 9-on the nipple. Thereafter the inclined portions of the slots will be presented to the pins, and the valve 23 and valve part 19 will be free to move lon 'tudinally.
- the lu ricant in the barrel will be compressed and the lubricant will act upon the valve to press it and the valve part forward to unseat the valve and permit lubricant under pressure to flow through the passage 32 in the valve stem, then the bored sealing part, and then press the washer l18 tightly against the end of the nipple, to prevent leakage of lubricant between the nipple and nozzle, While lubricant is being forced through the nipple.
- the gun may be disconnected from the nipple by turning the barrel 1 in a contra-clockwise direction.

- the lubricant under pressure in the barrel 1 presses the valve seat part 26 toward the valve 18 to make a lubricanttight joint between the seat and valve so that no lubricant can escape from the gun when not coupled with a nipple.
- valve seatpart 26 By permitting reciprocatory movement of the valve seatpart 26, greater manufacturing tolerances may be allowed, because in closing may move whatever slight variation there may be to permit the pins to enter the straight portions of the slots. Furthermore, the seat may be pressed by lubricant against'the seat, whereas, if the seat were fixed, the. exact movement of Ithe valve toward its seat would require very accurate cutting of the slots and locating of the parts.
- the gun is simple in construction (having -very few and simple parts) and is easy to engage with and operate when engaged with a nipple. Similarly, it is a simple matter to disconnect the gun from a nipple while leaving pressure on the lubricant in the barrel 1.

LUBRICATING APPARATUS.
This invention aims to provide improvements in lubricating apparatus and more particularly to improvements in so-called lubricant guns.

Fig. 3 is a section similar to F1g. 2, but showing the relation of parts after coupllng and valve opening;

Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the front head, nozzle and nipple;
Fig. 6 is a rear v1ew of the same; and
Figs. 7, 8, 9 and 10 are sections on thev lines 7 7, 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10, respectively, of Fig. 2.
Referring to the embodiment of my 1nvention illustrated in the drawings, I have C shown a lubricant gun for making a connection with a lubricant-receiving nipple and for forcing lubricant under pressure to a part to be lubricated (not shown).
vThe
i 2 providing an integral nozzle portion 3,
a removable rear head 4 to permit filling of lthe barrel 1, and a piston 5 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1) in the barrel for comprcsslng the lubricant. The piston is secured to the end of a stem 6 threaded through the rcar head 4, and ay handle 7 is secured to the outer end of the stem for turning it.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, as illustrated by .the drawings, the
nipple includes a body threaded at one end' n includes a barrel 1, a front headA mediately behind the aperture 11, the nozzle presents coupling shoulders 12, ada ted to underlie the projections on the nipp e. Interiorly of the nozzle sleeve, I provide a coupllng part 13 presenting a triangular shaped aperture passing entirely therethrough to receive the proJecting portions 9 of the nipple, and to prevent turning between this coup11ng part and the nipple. The coupling part iits into the nozzle so that the nozzle may be turned relative thereto, but is held against longitudinal movement by a spring ring 14 snapped into a groove 15 formed in the inner wall of the nozzle sleeve 3.
A sealing part 16, triangular in crosssectlon, is fitted into the coupling part 13 and anchored against longitudinal movement by a pin 17, which passes through one side of the coupling part 13 and sealing part v16 as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 8. The sealing part 16 is bored and carries at its outer end a flexible washer 18 for making a fluid-tight joint with the end of the lubricant-receiving nipple. A recess is provided behind this washer'l8 so that the lubricant may press the washer tightly against the nipple.
A reciprocable valve part 19 is also located wit-hin the nozzle part 3, and has a portion which fits the inner Wall of the nozzle sleeve, and another portion which is triangular in cross-section and fits within the coupling part 13, to prevent relative rotation between these two parts. Relative reciprocation and rotation between this valve part 19k and the nozzle 3 is governed by coordinated pin and slot connections as indicated by Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 9. Opposed pins 20, 20 are secured to the valve part 19'and present smooth portionsv which enter opposed slots 21, 21 cut through the nozzle sleeve. These slots are preferably concealed by a separate sleeve 22, which lits over a portion of the nozzle sleeve and is threadedly connected to the head 2fof the gun. The valve 23 may be formed as a part of the valve part 19, but I prefer, as illust-rated, to have the valve slidable in the valve part with 'a portion of the valve stem 24 sliding in the bore of the sealing part as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A sealing washer 25 is connected to the end of the stem 24 to prevent leakage ofA lubricant around the stem.
The. valve seat part 26 is assembled with a part 27, screwed into the head 2, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in such a manner that it may reciprocate slightly; it being limited in its movement in one direction by the shoulder 28, and in the opposite direction by the spring ring 29 snapped into the gro'ove 30,'n the part 27, to hold the seat part in assembly with the part 27. The seat may be provided directly on the part 27, but I prefer to provide it on a somewhat flexible leather part 31 carried by the seat part. Cup washers 33 and 34 respectively arc placed in back of the valve part 19 and valve seat part 26 to prevent leakage of lubricant around these parts, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The operation of the above described device may be as follows. The first movement Will occur between the straight portions of the slots and the'pins and this provides the coupling operation, because the shoulders 12 turn and engage behind the projections 9-on the nipple. Thereafter the inclined portions of the slots will be presented to the pins, and the valve 23 and valve part 19 will be free to move lon 'tudinally. By turning the handle 7, the lu ricant in the barrel will be compressed and the lubricant will act upon the valve to press it and the valve part forward to unseat the valve and permit lubricant under pressure to flow through the passage 32 in the valve stem, then the bored sealing part, and then press the washer l18 tightly against the end of the nipple, to prevent leakage of lubricant between the nipple and nozzle, While lubricant is being forced through the nipple.
The gun may be disconnected from the nipple by turning the barrel 1 in a contra-clockwise direction. The pins 20, 20 ride up the inclined surfaces of the slots 21, 21 to press the valve 23 against the valve seat on the washer 31 and then continue in the straight portions ofthe slots to uncouple the nozzle from the nipple. The lubricant under pressure in the barrel 1 presses the valve seat part 26 toward the valve 18 to make a lubricanttight joint between the seat and valve so that no lubricant can escape from the gun when not coupled with a nipple.
By permitting reciprocatory movement of the valve seatpart 26, greater manufacturing tolerances may be allowed, because in closing may move whatever slight variation there may be to permit the pins to enter the straight portions of the slots. Furthermore, the seat may be pressed by lubricant against'the seat, whereas, if the seat were fixed, the. exact movement of Ithe valve toward its seat would require very accurate cutting of the slots and locating of the parts.
The gun is simple in construction (having -very few and simple parts) and is easy to engage with and operate when engaged with a nipple. Similarly, it is a simple matter to disconnect the gun from a nipple while leaving pressure on the lubricant in the barrel 1. The coordinated pins and slots provide very simple means for controlling the operations of coupling, valve opening, valve closing and v uncoupling in their proper order.
