Description

Patented May 21, 1929.
UNITED STATES LESTER .1. CARLETON, 0E .MA gHEsTEE, New HAMPSHIRE.
GOLFING ACCESSORY.
Application filed March 22, 1928. Serial No.'263,746.
This invention relates to golfing accessories, and comprehends a wiping device which is particularly deslgned as a means for effecting the removal of moisture, sand, mudor other foreign substances from the handles 7 of golf clubs.
The invention broadly contemplates a device of this nature which effectually functions to clean the club handle and free the same of moisture, which devices may be installed at the various tees, in the club house or at predetermined points on the links or which devices may be portable and carried as a part of a-golfers equipment.
More specifically, the invention embodies an accessory which includes one or more annular contractile 'wiper elements through which the club handle is axially passed or which device is axially moved over the club handle, the inner periphery of the element being normally of a lesser diameter than the club handle to function in the manner of a squeegee to displace or remove moisture or other substances which adhere to the surface of the handle.
Other objects of the invention reside in the simplicity of construction and mode of use of the device, the economy with which the same may be produced and the general efficiency derived therefrom.
WVith the'above recited and other objects in view, referenceis had to the following descrip-, tion and accompanying drawings, in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope of the same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device secured to a support.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the wiping units removed from its housing.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view through the unit taken approximately on the line 44; of Figure 5. I
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional View through the wiping unit illustrating a club handle operatively associated therewith.
Figure 6 is a sectional perspective view illustrating as a modification a portable form of the device. 7
Figure 7 is a transverse sectional view taken approximately on the line 77 of Figure 1.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 where the device is attached t-o'a support such as a tee box, a suitable housing 1 is provided for protecting the wiper elements or units from the elements, and preferably this'housing is of substantially tubular formation attached in any suitable man ner such as by clamps 2 to its support. The
housing as illustrated consists of a pair of mating semi-tubular sections 3 and 4, each being respectively provided at one edge with longitudinally spaced inwardly offset lugs overlappingtheedge of the other section and receiving therethrough suitablefastening elements such as the bolts 6 which detachably retainthe sections in mated assembled rela tion. The uppermost section 4 is formed with portions 4 extending beyondthe ends of the lower section 3 to constitute hoods for protect ing the housing against the entrance of rain, snow or sleet. The lower section 3 is formed with longitudinally spaced drain apertures 7 to allow for gravitational discharge of water from the casing and to further assist in the circulation of air therethrough for drying the interior thereof and the wiping elements or units which are moistened thereby.
The units or elements 10 which constitute one of the principal features of the present invention include essentially an annulus 11 of flexible material having a contractile inner peripheral edge 12 which is normally of a diameter less than the diameter of the club handle 11 so as to function as a squeegee for effectually contacting with the periphery of said club handle when the same is inserted and axially moved through the element or unit 1O. The element or unit 10 preferably consists of a hollow cylindrical substantially rigid member 13 covered on its inner and outer faces by asheath composed'of strips of flexible material 1 1 and 15, such as chamois. The strips are of greater length than the length of the cylindrical sections and the protruding edges which extend beyond the ends of the member 18 are joined by a line of stitch- 1 ing 16 adjacent the opposite end edges of the member 13. The protruding edges are then directed inwardly and gathered by a line of stitching 17-which forms a bight presenting the inner annular edge 12. IVherea nonelastic material such as chamois is used, an annular circumferentially contractile element 18 is arranged within the bight formed by the line of stitching 17 for normally effecting circumferential contraction of the edge 12. In practice, the elements or units 10 are disposed Within the seats 8 thereby presenting a battery of Wiper members Within the housing 1. Vhen during the progress of the game the handles of the clubs become moisture laden or sand, dirt or other foreign substances col device in which the elements or units 10 are.
disposed Within the seats 8 of the cylindrical. casing 1. In this form, the construction of the units or elements 10 is identical with that previously described! In. this instance, the device may be moved over the club handle H or the device held in one hand and the club handle moved axially back and forth therethrough.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A device for Wiping the handles of golf clubs or the like by axial passage of the handle therethrough, said device including a substantially rigid tubular member, a flexible sheath thereover havingan inwardly projecting annular portion having an inner peripheral Wiping edge and a circumferentially contractile element carried thereby adjacent said Wiping edge thereo'l and constituting means for normally contracting said edge to a lesser diameter than that of the club handle,
2. A device for wiping the handles of golf clubs or the likevby axial passage of the handle therethrough, said device including a Wiper consisting of an annulus having an inner peripheral Wiping edge and means carried by the same adjacent said Wiping edge "for normally contracting said edge to define a circumference of lesser size than the circumfere ce of the club handle anda housing for a plurality of said annular members including longitudinally spaced annular seats Within which said members are mounted and maintained against axial movement.
