VEHICLE TOY DEVICE.
- Application filed May 27,
' This invention relates to a new and amusing device in the nature of a vehicle toy, par- 'ticularly adapted for use by children for the purpose of providing a means of locomotion. The object of the inventign is to provide a vehicle toy of novel construction, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing. Y
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a toy con structed accordin to this invention. 'Fig. 2 is an en arged'vertical central sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a fra mentary horizontal sectional View, taken ont e line 3,3 of Fig. 2. 1 1
Fig. 4 is a sectional view, taken on'the, line 44ofFig.2. f I
Fig. 5 isa vertical sectionalview, taken on the line 5'5 of Fig. 3.
Fig.6 is a fragmentary, partly sectionalde-- tail view of the connection between the brake operating rods.
The reference numeral 10 indicates generally the body of a toy simulating a horse or other animal of hollow constructiomand'having back 'legs 11, front legs '12, a movable head 13, and a movable breast'14. A casing 153s secured within th'ebody 10, and rotatably supports a shaft 16, having gears 17 fixed thereon by pins 18 passing throu h collars 19 integralwith the gears. A bra e wheel 20 is fixed on shaft 16 also, and; is engageable by a brake band 21, held at one end by rod 22, supported in the casing'l5, and 'at the other end pivotally engaging a brake rod 23. Clutchingfacemembers 24 are fixed on the shaft16 by pins 25 and are engageable by complementary clutching face members 26 urged into engagement by springs 27 loosely mounted coaxially on shaft 16. The teeth of the clutching members are so formed as to engage when turned in one direction, and
- slip past each other when turned in the otherdirection. Arms 29 roject "from members 26 and the free ends 0 the arms connect with cords 30 passed beneath idlers 31 on shaft 32 rotatably supported in the casing 15. The.
cords then extend over idlers 33 and 33, and through apertures 34 in the, casing 15 and body 10. Foot'rests 35 are secured to the 5 ends of the cords. A spring 36 acts between the top of the casing 15 and the levers 29, urging the levers into an uppermost position. Each of the legs 11 are provided with wheels 37 fixed on a rotatable shaft 38 between the 1927. Serial No. 194,643.
A bridge member 45 extends across the bosses 43, and the breast member 14 is-pivoted at 46.
to this bridge member. The numeral14 in Fig. 4 illustrates that the lower portion ofthe breast member 14 is of curved contour so asto engage around the bosses 43 ande'xtend beneath the pivot point 46.v The ends of levers 44 are pivotally connected to a cross rod 47, urged by obliquely arranged springs 48 into a central position. A rod 49 hasa lower pivoted section 49 pivotally secured to the center of cross rod 47 and the rod 49 extends upwardly into the head 13, and is connected to a top section 49 by means ofa pin 49 projecting from the rod 49 and slidably engaging in a slotin the 'section' 49, the section 49 being secured to a cross rod 50 secured to the said head 13. V
Thebrake rod 23-has a hollow end which telescopically connects with a rod 51 and an expansion spring 52 acts between flange 23 on the rod 23 and collar-5'1 on the rod 51, and serves to communicate motion from one rod to the other; The end of rod 51 remote from N1- OFFICE.
the" telescopic connection ispi-votally .connectedto rod 49 intermediate the ends thereof, and a limiting rod '52 is pivotally con- 'nected to rod 49 to engage a limiting collar 53 depending from casing'15, so asto restrain spring 52 from moving rod 49 further than desired. The head '13 is connected to the body 10 by a universal joint 54. A saddle 5 5 7 is disposed on'the bodyof the animal, and
reins 56 connect with the head 13.
Theoperation of the toy consists of the user-thereof sitting on the saddle 55, engag- Iing his feet in foot'rests 35 and periodically loo , 47, the levers la, the rods 12, and finally the Wheels 41.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form, construction, and arrangement of the several elements employed, it will be understood that the device is, nevertheless, susceptible of considerable modification therein, and we therefore reserve the right-and privilege of resorting to all such changes aswmay be fairly embodied within the spirit :and scope of the invention as claimed.
i Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
a 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a brake wheel on a driving shaft oi? the device, of a braking band engageable with the wheel, a braking rod connected with the braking band, another rod in telescopic connection with. the braking rod, an expansion spring, normally urging the rods apart, the second mentioned rod being connected between the ends of a rod, an animals head associated with the device, and the last mentioned rod being movable to operate the brakewhen the animals head is tilted upwardly,
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a brake wheel on the driving shaft of tile device, of a braking band engageable with the wheel, a braking'rod connected with the braking band, at one end thereof, theother end ofthe band being connected to a stationary part, another rod in telescopic connection with the braking rod, an expansion spring normally urging the rods apart, the second mentioned rodbeing connected between the ends of a rod, an animals head associated with the device, and
, signatures.
thereof, the other end of the band being con,
nected to a stationary part, another rod in telescopic connection with the braking rod, anexpansion spring connected between the rods, and normally urging the rods apart, the second, mentioned rod being connected between the ends of a rod,.an animals head associated with the device, and the'last men tioned rod being movable to operate the brake when the animals head is tilted upwardly.
a. In a device of'the class described, the combination with a brake wheel on the driving shaft of the device, of a braking band engageable with thewheel, a braking rod connected with the braking band, another rod in telescopic connection with the braking rod,
a means for normally urging the rods apart,
the second mentioned rod being connected between the ends of a rod, an animals head as sociated with the device, and the last mentioned rod being movable to operate the brake when the animals head is tilted upwardly.
5. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a brake wheel on the driv ing shaft of the device, of a braking band engageable with the wheel, a braking rod connected with the braking band, another rod in telescopic connection with the braking rod and resiliently connected therewith, the second Inentionedrod being connected between the ends of a rod, an animals head associated with the device, and the last mentioned rod being movable to operate the brake when the animals head is tiltedupwardly. In testimony whereof we have affixed our LESTER KAUFMAN. FRANK, HERBERT FOG.
