Description

May 21, 1929. J. E. GARVIN LUGGAGE CARRIER Filed March 8, 1927 INVEN TOR.
Patented May 21, 1929.
JAMES E. GARVIN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
LUGGAGE CARRIER;-
Application filed March a, 1927. Serial No. 173,621.
This invention relates to luggage carrying devices apphed to automobiles.
Such carriers are customarily secured to the running board, used as a step in entering.
and leaving a car, by bolts or like fastenings, -which, due to the vibration of the car when operating, are prone to become loosened, causing annoyance from the sound engendered and not infrequently loss of parts includingthe article carried.
Moreover, the perforations intthe running board are objectionable, as they tend to weaken the same and areunsightly.
It is therefore an object to provide an efficient device whereby luggage of any ordinary type may be safely secured on the exterior of a car without mutilating or disfiguringit.
A further feature is in the provision of one or more bars permanently fixed to the splash plate at a spaced distance outwardly therefromto which straps or like flexible fastening means may be engaged, the weight of the luggage being taken preferably by the running board below.
Another purpose is in the production of a simple and inexpensive device, which may be relied on to perform its functions. V 7
These advantages are attained by the novel and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereafter described and shown in the annexed drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 isa perspective view of a conVen--.
tional type of automobile illustrating. the appiication of an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the device as appliedto the splash plate of a car. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3+3 of Fig. 2 and drawn to a further enlarged scale. v
I Substantially all types of cars are provided with running boards as indicated by the nu meral 5, the same being used as steps in entering and leaving the car, and being at an ac commodating level. c
Extending from the ends of the running board are mud guards 6 and 7 respectively over the front and rear wheels as shown.
A splash plate or guard 8 is attached to the inneredge ofthe running board 5 extending upwardly to join the body of the car by an in' tom" of the door, this splash guard reaching between the curved front and rear mud guards, which const'ruction is typical and illustrative only.
' The inventionconsists in the application of a bar 'or rail 10, preferably of thin rectangular cross section, to the splash guard plate I along 113s" upper edge, parallel with the running board and at a considerable distance above it, the bar outstanding from the splash 1 UNITED STATES.PATENT LOFFI C-EQ Q engaged by nuts 13 atthe back of the plate,
these nuts being elongated to contactwith the from turning. V
The article to be carried, as illustrated by a (bag 14, may rest on the running board 5, the straps15 whichpass around the bar or bars 10 being secured bybuckles 16 or other adequate fastenings whereby the article is firmly anchored. I I e This arrangement is'adjustable to suit conditions and, as there are no parts to become loosened by shocks, jars, vibration, etc., positive security is attained'and noise eliminated.
It is to be noted that notwithstanding the illustration shows the article of luggage as resting on the, running board, certain articles, as for instance golf bags and like small packages, may be suspended by the straps alone and'rest against the face of the splash plate, free and clear of the running board atsome distance above itQ h i It is further within the scope of the invention to provide two bars arranged in spaced relation if considered desirable todo so.)
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in'the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desiredto restrict thedetails to the exactinstruction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exerelse of 1nvent1on, may be resorted towithout conflicting with the scope. of the appended claim.
Having thus described my'invention', what gular element 9 and thus are prevented I claim as new and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, is: a 7 V In a luggage carrying devlce for use on vehicles provided with a running board, and a bar secured thereto; and a-series of bolts pass splash plate, having one curved end the coming through said bar and said plate and prohination of the following elements; a bar vided With nuts adapted to he looked against secured in spaced parallel relation to the said turning by the curved end of the splash plate. 5 splash plate; aplurality of luggage encircling In testimony WhereofI have hereunto afelements adapted to pass through the space fixed my signature.
between the said splash plate and the parallel 7 JAMES E. GARVIN.
