snorrme BAG.
Application filed July 3, i926. serial No. 12o,4e1.
form the receiver for packages and having carrying and supporting means extending about the bottom of the receptacle and up i v thel'sides to provide carrying handles.
An important detail of my invention resides in providing a simple, inexpensive 15 shopping bag having handle means permitting the bag to be supported by one handle, either while it is being filled or until .a packa e is placed within the same.- I accomplish this by looping the cord supporting means at the handle and locking the same beneath a holding member under the marginal edge of the bag.
These features, together with other details and objects of the invention will be more clearly and fully set forth in the specification and claims. s
In the drawings forming part of my specification Figure 1- is I a perspective view of my shopping bag as it would appear inuse. K
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic illustration of the supporting cords apart from the shopping bag/ The shopping bag A is madeof aper or other suitable material which may e readily folded in to a flat compact state when it is not in use.
The shopping bag A is designed of a simple nature, yet having the property of carrying a considerable load by reason of the fact that the bag is adapted to be supported and; carried by the supporting cord means B The supporting cord means B is formed with downwardly depending cordportions 10, bottom cord portions'll, which extend across the bottom 12 of the bag Afrom one side of the bag to the other. The depending cords 10are formed into. a handle or loop portion 14 on one side'and the other side is extended up into, the end loops 15 and 16 which loop together in a manner to form the double handle portion, while the ends of the loops 15 and 16 are joined together in a knot 17. The ends of the loop 16'extend through the openings 18 and 19, re"- Spectively, and are then )assed inward through the openings 20 and 21,1respctively, to the knot 17.- .These openings are formed in the reinforcing member 22 which is made of cardboard or, other suitable material and which is adaptedto be concealed and positioned beneath the inturned marginal upper. edge 23, of the bag. Y
Slits 24: formed in the lower edge of the reinforcingmemberj22 permits the ends of the loops 15 and 16 to be slipped into the openings 20 and 21, after the knot 17 has: been tied.
This form of construction permits the tying of the knot 17 before it has been if serted beneath the marginaledge 23 and into the reinforced member 22 which provides an economical construction in the manufacture of the bag, and yet provides a) handle member G made by the loops 15 and 16 which. includes a lock in the handle so that the cords will not slip while holding firmly in the handle, and the load of the bag will be supported through the knot\ and ends-of the loops 15 and '16. This forms a temporary holding means so that the bag can be-readily carried by the handle C by one hand, while packages are placed in the bag. This is a very important feature of my invention as it provides a very simple, inexpensive structure which M does not make it prohibitive to manufacture at a reasonable rice and which provides a I c shopping bag of a desirable nature where a construction capable of being supported by one hand is desired.
This bag also provides a form of shop ping bag which permits the handles to readily'adjust themselves to the load, permit ting the cords 10 to slide through the openings 25 in the side walls of the bag so that the bottom portions 11 of the cordsmay adjust themselves in proper relation to the load within the bag so that virtually the entire loadof the bag is carried from the handles 14 and the handle C formed by the loops 15 and 16, so that equalization of the carrying means is readily afi'orded, yet providing a handle member C to permit the bag to be-carried by one handle.
/ In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my shopping bag and while the drawings illustrate a particular form and construction of the same, I desire to have it understood that these illustrations are only suggestive of a means of carrying out my;
- ride a handle and means for securing. the. ends of sald cord 1n amanner to provide'a invention and that the same may be applied to uses other than those above set forth within the. scope of the following claims: I claim:
1. Carrying means for a shopping bag ing and concealing the attached ends of said cord means to provide a non-slippping loop handle to permit the bag to be carried singularly thereby while it is being filled, the cord means extending freely over and through the bag to be adjustable under strain of a load in the same. v
2. A shopping bag including, cord carrying members extending oventhe'sides and bottom of said shopping bag to adjust with the load carried in the bag, said cord forming strands downlthe sides over the bottom of the bag and looped on one. side to prohandlelecked' in relation to the side of'said bag to permit the bagto be carried 'byisaid locked handle member independent of the other handle and adjustable when'carried by both handles to permit the cord to adjust in relation to the load in the bag.
3. A'shopping bag having a carrying cord adapted to form handles on each side. thereof, meansforlocking a portion of said cord at one of the handles to permit the .bag to be carried by said handle singularly,
and to permit the cordto'adjust when carried by both handles in relation to the load in thebag; r
4:. A carrying cord for a shopping bag including, strands adapted to extend over the sides and across the bottom of the shop,
ping bag, and adapted to form handles on each side thereof, said strandsfbeing adjustable with the load in the bag when car-' 7 ried by the handles, one of said handles having means for locking the same to the side of the bag to permit the bag to be carried entirely by'said locked handleto support the entire loadjin the bag While thebag is being WALTER It.
