WITNE 5555 i INVENTU UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. HOPKINS, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUGKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR FILLING AND DISCHARGING LIQUID-PACK AGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171381, dated December 21, 1875; application filed September 10, 1875.
To all 'whom it may conccm:
Be it known that I, JAS. M. HOPKINS, of Louisville, in the county of J efferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Inprovements in Device for Filling and Discharging Liquid-Packages; and I do hereby declare the followin g to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangenent of a device for filling liquor-packages, as will be herenafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to ,which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents a suitable frame-work, upon which is supported the vat or other vessel, B, containing the liquor, and from which the barrels or other packages are to be filled. In the frame A are two uprght guide-pcsts, O C, from the lower ends of which two horizontal beams, C' C', or sills project forward. The upright posts 0 C form guides for the upanddown movement of an L-shaped frane, D D', the upright side bars D ot' which are grooved, or otherwise formed so as to fit around three sides of theguide-posts O O. The horizontal bars D' of the movable frame are on the outside of the beams or sills U', and are suitably connected by cross bars or slats. The upper surf'aces of the bars D' are made concave to receive a cask, barrel, or other package. In the main frame A is pivoteda lever, E, the inner end of which is, by a link, a, connected with the L-shaped frame D D', and the outer end of said lever is held at any point desired by a ratchet plate or bar, b. The barrel or other package, being placed upon the horizon-` tal part of the frame D D', under the fillingcock, can, by this means, be raised and firmly held to it. The fillin g-oock G, inserted in and projecting from the Vat or Vessel B, is constructed With the cut-off plug d very near the orifice, and with a projection, e, turned down sufficient to enter the bung-hole. On this projection, resting against a shoulder, i?, is placed a cushion or Washer, h, of rubber or other suitable material, so that no liquid can escape while the package is filling or filled until the same is lowered. m is the vent made through the cock, communicating with a passage, m, in the cut-off plug d when the cock is open, and with a pipe, n, reaching as high as the source from which the package is being filled, so as to prevent loss by neglect or accident.
The plug d is placed near the orifice, so that as little liquid as possible will or can be between the top of package and the plug When filled, as the same will be lost, be it much or little.
In a full-sized cock the plug will be about three-fourths inch from the end, which gives three-eighths inch for cushion or Washer and three-eighth-inch projection to enter the hun ghole of package.
In using this device, as the barrel never has to be raised over about four inches, the lifting device above 'described is preferably made of iron, about tWenty-two inches high, and the operator can use his foot on the lever E to raise the package, leaving the hands free to guide the barrel to the cock.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the tank B, a cock, G, provided with a vent, n, that reaches up to or above the highest level ot' the liquid i the tank, and an elevating-platibrn to raise the vessel to the cock, substantially as shown.
In testimony that I. claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of August, 1875.
J. M. HOPKINS. witnesses:
HENRY RATTERMAN, FRANK HERFLIN.
