MICHAEL IB. BOWEN, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR .TO FARIES MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
sooxn'r ARM FOR LIGHT-REFLECTIN SHADES.
My invention relates to improvements in socket arms in which the principal objectis to maintain the source of light as near the center of a light reflecting shade as possible,
consistent with convenient and practical wirin g and assembling, and in consideration of adaptation to a minimum sized light reflecting shade of conventional type.
The objects of my improvement are:
1. To provide a socket arm of this type so devised as to require a minimum amount of machining and handling in the course of its production or manufacture.
2. To provide such features of construc- 5 tion in my improved socket arm as will permit the ready and simple attachment thereto of a known make of electric socket, although I desire it to be understood that no claim is made tosaid electric socket, as a whole or any part thereof nor to its combined use with my invention.
3. To provide means for attaching said known make of electric socket to my invention in such a manner as topositively insure the downward position of the pull chain eyelet on said socket so that the pull chain will always hang from the under side of the same.
These and other objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing the device in use upon a conventional lamp, a portion of the light reflecting shade being broken away to reveal the details of a typical instal- 3; lation.
'5 i The improved socket arm described in this application is secured to a lamp by means of the threads on one end thereof, this feature being acknowledgedly old and immaterial to the present invention.
metal, brass,- for example, as it may thus be easily made in one piece in a single casting operation of which the economic advantages are obvious.
5 The right angle shaped. channel arm 11 This device is made preferably of cast forms a suitable open conduit for the electric wires 11 -A leading to the threaded electric socket 11B engaged at one end of said right angle shaped channel arm 11 by means of'the fingers 12, .13 and 14, which are arranged forspaced engagement by and between the said threaded electric socket 11-B and its" threaded collar 11C. The finger 13 is provided with a rightangle projection .13A which serves to prevent said threaded electric socket 11-13 from turning or twisting, thereby preventing the possibility of damage to the insulation on the electric wires 11'A as well as insuring the uniform position of every socket in consideration of quantity production in the manufacturing and assembling of this improved socket arm for portable electric lamps.
Apart from thenecessary act of wiring the socket to be used it will be noted that no screws or other separate parts are requisite to the securing of this device to the socket and that the same may beassemblcd simply by the use of the assemblers hands without tools.
In the practical application of this device to a portable electric lamp, the threads 10 on one end of said channel arm 11 are brought into engagement with corresponding threads in a suitable fitting upon the lamp and turned up until channel arm 11 is in the desired position for wiring and the attachment of the threaded socket 11B and its threaded collar 11C. Said threaded socket 11-13 is then held in position against the fingers 12, 13 and 14, and said threaded collar 11C is then slipped over said fingers 12, 13 and 14 into threaded engagement with said threaded socket 11-B.
Said threaded collar 11.C may then be turned up tightly, thus holding in firm en gagement said fingers 12, 13 and 14.
The advantages of my improved socket arm will appear readily evident, especially considering its features of practical utility combined with economic production and installation.
' Having thus described my invention, what I regard as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V i
1. In a socket arm substantially as described, an' arm having a channel'or groove extending from one end to the other thereof, means on one end of said arm for engaging a threaded collar socket, said means comprising a plurality offingersadapted to engagement by and between a threaded socket and a correspondingly threaded collar for the same;
2. In a socket arm substantially as described, a right angle shaped arm formed in a groove or channel along its entire course, a
plurality of spaced fingers integral with one end of saidarm, said fingers adapted to lie flat against the normal top of a threaded socket so that a. co respon'dinglythreaded collar when brought into threaded engagement with said socket will thereby engage the outer extremities of said fingers.
3. In a socket arm substantially as described, a right angle shape arm formed in a groove or channel along its entire course,
three flat, spaced fingers integral with one brought into threaded engagement with the normal top of said socket will thereby engage the outer edges of said fingers.
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing speclfication.
MICHAEL B. BOWEN.
