TTNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONAS BITTENBENDER, OF BEAVER VALLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT m SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent N 0. 171,262, dated December 21, 1875; application filed October 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ONAS BITTENBENDER,
of Beaver Valley, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer-' use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and" to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of a window frame and sash with my improved sash-holder. Fig. 2 is a detached view of my ratchet-bar and gearwheel. Fig. 3 is. a detached perspective view.
My invention consists of a novel combination of gearwheels and a double ratchet-bar for holding window-sashes, the construction and operation of which devices will be hereinafter more fully described, and then definitely claimed.
In the construction of my improved sashholder I cast a double ratchet-bar, A, as shown in Fig. 2. This bar is then attached to the side of the window-frame B, as shown in Fig. 1. It is covered in part by the bead or strip G, which is between the upper and lower sashes. In each sash is placed a gear-wheel, D, provided with a short horizontal axle, E, which carries a smaller toothed wheel, F. This toothed wheel is to be locked by a springcatch, G, which is operated by the cord I, as will be now explained.
The operation is as follows; When itis desired to raise or lower either sash the operator pulls gently upon the cord I, and with the other hand raises or lowers the sash, as desired, and then slackens the cord, when the catch G immediately locks the sash in place.
The small plate H may be cast or stamped from sheet metal, and the .catch Gr may be made from a small wire, with a short coil to give sufficient spring.
My invention, therefore, requires very little fitting, and is very cheap, efficient, and durable.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The double ratchet-bar A, fastened to r the window-frame B. in combination with the gearwheel D upon the sash, substantially as set forth.
2. The toothed wheel F and spring-catch G, in combination with the gear-wheel D and double ratchet-bar A,- substantially as speci- I In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JONAS BITTENBENDER.
