FORM MAKER FOR .RQAD CURBINGS.
Application led May 5,
The irri/indien relates to the art of road making and has par -icular reference to replacing` of curbs on pa ved highways. Y
Because et the .increase in the use ot motor vehicles, roads that have heretofore been oil sutlicient width to adequately take cere ot `niotor vehicle traffic ere now insuiiicient for vision of a machine designed to out outthe' dirt at the sides of the road to forni the inold into which the concrete is poured to torni the shoulder, the inold obviously beingbuilt up where necessary with timbers.
This operation has heretofore been done principally by hand and for that reason has been somewhat expensive, and a further ob- ,iect of the invention is to reduce the expense ot nialing the inold'i'ornis.
A :further object ot the invention is the provision of a torni inalrer including aplow, said plow being,` mounted for movement on a suitable guide, the guide being,` adapted to be adjusted to liinit the depth of the furrow cut by the plow to the Idepth ol the i'nold desired.
The invention nlll be described in detail hereinafter and. will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top plan view oit the improved torni maker,
Figure 2 is a side View inelevution,
Figure 5 is a sectional do Y l on the plane indicated by the line 5&5 of lTig'ure d,
.Figure 6 is a sectional detail on a pleno indica ted by the line (ht'oif Figure l, a nd Figure 7 is a sectional detail on a plane indicated by the line 7-7 ot Figure 6,
ln the drawings similar reference chaine` ters will be used to designate Correspendingparts throughout the several'views.
'lhe improved l'orin maker is mounted on a truck l having wheels 2 that may be of the tlangre type as shown in the drawings for operation on rails or maybe of any other selectsaid cylindrical portion 1S entendinf 1927. Serial No. 139,020.
ed type found most suitable ior the condi tions. Truck l is provided with uinight side ineinbers 3 supporting transverse rods d, ou which is slidably mounted a platform 5, said plat- `torni being adjustable on the truck laterally thereof to adinit oi' moving` the phtttorni to properly place the plow share, to be hereinai'ter described, to cnt ont the earth where needed. to torni the mold, and to adjust the position ot' the plow share es the work of :forming` the inold progresses to admi tot inaking the niold torni of different widths ns inay be required.
Secured to the plattform 5 is an 'lipi,i,frl1tsup porting. member G, having a portion extending' in front oit the platform as sli-own at 7, and pivotrlly mounted on the ente .ded portion is a guide ineinber 8 that conipi 'ses two longituc'linal beams 9 that are spaced apart by means of cross ineinbers l and ll, and straddle the torwardly extended portions olf the supperting,` member 6 and are pivoted thereto by means ot a pivot pin l2. A traveler 13 is mounted for longitudinal travel on the guide nieniber 8, having rollers le journaled on shafts l connecting downwardly extend ed Jtlenges 16 engaging the upper surface ot the ,duide nieinbei 8. A plow stock l? havin p; a reduced cylindrical portion 13 is rotatably mounted in an opening 19 in traveler 13, and has a notched dish 20 secured to its upper end, p between the side beams 9, 2l indicating* dig mount ed on the stock` 17 and engaging;` the under side oit the ,guide ineinber 8. Q2 indicates a plow share secured to the plow stock 17. See` cured to the cross member ll is :in np ri n'ht 23, and 2d designates a rod pivotally secured at to said upright 23 and having its opposite end pivotally onfgagin as at 9,6 a lever fulernnied :it E28 on supporting; member (l, 29 designating; a segmental rack adapted to be engaged by a slidingl detent El() controlled by a thumb latch 3l on the lever, 32 designating i e sprinp' to hold the detent 30 in engagement with segun-intel raclr 29. By this construel tion it will be apparent that guide member S and parts carried thereby may be adjusted on the pivot l2 to govern the depth of the cut i of the plow share 22, and also to lift the plow share from engagement with the ground when the machine .is to be moved troni piece to place.
rllo adj ust the angle of the out ot. the plow shore 20 dish 2Q is provided with a series oi" notches 33, and 3d is a pin to engage in anbers 35 and 36.
opening inthe taveler 13 and in one ot the notches 83 to bold tlieplou share in adjusted position. n i Y Supported on platform 5 are upright mem- 37 is a shaft journaled in the upriglite 35, 3G, and secured taereto between said uprig'lits is a drum 8S. 'lf supportingineinber (i is provided with a curved recess 39 to receive the drum 88. 40 designates a Cable or other flexible member connected one of its terminals vr'tli the trout endoi the travelerl and having; its otlier terminal secured to the drum on one Side of' the supporting` member G, vrliile il is another cable or otlie' Vflexible element secured rto tbe rear end of tlie traveler i3 and 'trained around the pulley 42 joi-irnaled on eliafl;y ad liacent to the outer free end` of the guide niember 8 and having its free terminal secured to drum 3S on tbe, other side of' the upright member G 'from 'the end of the cable ell), and designed to be vnpped ou tbe drum in tbe opposite direction 'from tbe cable 40. 3y libia construction it will be apparent that rotation of tliedrum in one direction Will move the ploufv share 2Q 'towardtlie truek l to cut a furrow", While rotation of the drnm 38 in the opposite direction Will serve to return the traveler 18 and plow share 22 to the outer end of l.the guide member preparatory to cutting another furrow...
Sec'ured't-o the ende Vof tlie slialt 37 on tlie outer side olf tlie upright inembe 35 and 3G, arepulleys el and and trained on Said pulley@` 44 and l5 are belts 4G and i7 that trained on pulleys; i8 and i9 Secured for rotation vrwith shafts 50 and 51A respeetively,
. journaled on ugriglits 35 and 36, respectively.
tbe device, and it being' considered to ybe 52 and 53 indicate pulleys keyed to shafts Y 50 and 5l respectively, Aand adapted to be driven from any type oilmotor, fl indicato i anidle pullej,rv loose on tbe inner end or allait 5l to'V accommodate the idle belt on tlic motor when til-ie plov: sliare is notbeing;` operated, it. beingr apparent 'that any standard form ol' belt nl lier may be used in connection with Y necessary to illuetratertlio motor for driving-gj boards ""lie pulleys and the beltsliiftingf meclianiem.
Y' In use after the trench is dug' the length of tlie guide member or boom 9v form beards will be soty up to provide the mold for pourin the concrete or Vother material. These fori are placed apart a width correuponi. ing' to the gauge of tlie Wheels 2 and thereafter tbc form boards are used an a lrark for the wheels, suitable anelioring means being;r provided to [ix` tlie truck l lurin f r tln exraratingsf ope ation ty will be also apparent, that the machine .isaflaptable for gradinor roadways for surfacing roads and may also be employed in Subgrading.
