PRESSURE REDUCING AND REGULATING VALVE.
Application filed October 11, 1926. Serial No. 140,866.
This invention is a novel improvement in pressure reducing and regulating valves,
and the principal object thereof is to provide a simple and efiicient reducing and regulating valvefor steam, water, or gas pipes,
said valve maintaining a discharge pressure depending upon and corresponding with the supply pressure, the discharge pressure bearing a predetermined ratio .thereto, thereby enabling the operator to control or vary the discharge pressure by merely controlling or varying the supply pressure. 1 I i Other objects of inventionwill be hereinafter set fort e I will explain the invention with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates one practical embodiment thereof to enable others familiar with the art to adopt and use the same, and will summarize in: the claims the novel features of construction, and the novel combination of parts, for which protection'is desired. j The drawing shows a section through the valveand the adjacent portions for the supply and discharge pipes.
As shown in the drawings, the valve comprises a body 1 having 'an. inlet opening 1 and a diametrically opposed discharge opening 1 which may be connected by flange couplings in the usual manner with the supply and discharge pipes, S and D, respectivel W Within the body is a double valve seat 1,
1, :fior the double valve 2 2F, mounted on a stem 2 which passes downwardly through the body 1 and into atwo column frame 3, bolted or otherwise secured to the lower end of body 1, as shown. Frame 3 is provided 40 with an opening 3 in column 3", into which extends a lever 4 having its inner end pivoted as at 4 to a lug on column 3 opposite the opening 3. Lever 4 is also pivoted, as at 4", to the valve stem 2, whereby as the lever 4 is rocked the double valve 2*, 2" will open or close against the double valve seat 1,'1 of the body, to establish or close communication between the supply pipe S and the interior of the body 1.
The discharge pipe D is preferably similarly connected with the outlet 1 of the body 1 by a suitable flange coupling, in the usual manner, said discharge pipe D bein preferably disposed diametrically opposlte the supply pi e S. o
The va ve stem 2 extends down beyond the lever 4 and has its outer end connected with a diaphragm 5 mounted in a diaphragm casing .5 integral with or connected to the casing of chamber 3 whereby as the diaphragm 5is actuated the lever 4 will likewise be rocked. The portion of the diaphragm casing 5 below the diaphragm 5 is connected b a pipe 5 with the'discharge pipe D beyon the body 1, whereby the'pressure below the diaphragm 5 will correspond with the actual pressure in the discharge pipe D.
Connectedwith the body 1 diametrically opposite the frame 3, is a frame 6 somewhat similar to frame 3; said frame 6 having opposed openings 6, 6 in columns 6, 6 through which passes a lever 7 which is pivoted as at 7 to column 6 opposite one of the openings, such as 6. A link 8 connects the outer adjacent ends of rods 4 and 7, as shown. On the opposite-end of lever 7 from link 8 is an ad ustable weight 7 for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
Mounted above the chamber 6 is a diaphragm casing 9 in. which is mounted a diaphragm 9; said diaphragm 9 being connects ed by a link 9 with the lever 7 adjacent the pivot point 7 of said lever. The diaphragmcasing 9 above the diaphragm 9 is connected by a pipe 9 with the supply pipe S, whereby the pressure above the diaphragm 9 will correspond with that in supply pipe S.
By the above arrangement, the diaphragms 5 and 9 are connected with pivoted levers 4 and 7 respectively on the same side of the pivot points 4 and 7 of said levers; and the adjacent ends of levers 4 and 7 are furth'er connected together by link 8. Hence, the pressure above diaphragm 9 will oppose that below diaphragm 5 and any change in pressure on either diaphragm will result in a shifting of lever 4 and of the valve stem 2. Weight 7 may be adjusted to just compensate for the weight of valve 2, 2", or may 100 be set to produce a constant fixed difierence in pressure ratio.
The ratio between the area of the diaphragm 9 and the area of the diaphragm 5 determines the ratio between the supply and discharge pressures. The weight 7 on lever-7 affords a means of introducing a constant fixed difference between the discharge pressure obtained and that which would ex- 1st of no weight were used. Hence the dis-- charge pressure will always hear a predetermined ratio to the supply pressure,thereby permitting the operator to control the discharge pressure by regulating the supply pressure in pipe S.
One important application contemplated for my inventionis its use in heating-sysat high pressure and to use it at low pressure, my valve aflording a means for .varying the discharge pressure by controlling the pressure in the transmission piping.
I do not-limit my invention 'to the exact details as shown in. the drawing, for obviously changes may be made therein within the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a pipeline, a valve, a pair of noncommunicating diaphragm chambers, a pipe connection between the chamber of one of said diaphragms and the inlet of the valve; a second pipe connection between the chamber of the other diaphragm and the outlet of the valve; a pair of pivoted levers operatively connected with the respective diaphragms and adapted to be moved in opposite directions thereby; and a link connecting the adjacent ends of said levers; one of said levers being connected with the valve stem.
2. In a pipe line, a valve, a pair of diaphragms, one of said diaphragms being connected to operate by the inlet pressure of the valve, and the other to operate by the outlet pressure thereof; a pair of parallel pivoted levers operatively connected with the respective diaphragms and adapted to be moved in opposite directions thereby; and a link connecting the adjacent ends of said .levers; one of said levers being connected with the valve stem. tems where it is desired to transmit st 'eam 3. In a pipe line, a valve provided with a stem, a pair of diaphragms, means for imposing the valve inlet pressure on one diaphragm; means for imposing the valve outlet pressure on the other diaphragm; a pair of parallel pivoted levers op ratively connected with the respective diaphragms; one of said levers being connected with the valve stem; a link connecting the levers whereby the inlet pressure diaphragm will tend to open the valve and the outlet pressure diaphragm to close the valve; and an adjustable Weight on the other lever.
4. In a pipe line, a valve, a pair of opposed diaphragms, means for imposing the valve inlet pressure on one diaphragm; means for imposing the valve outlet pressure on the other diaphragm; a pairof parallel pivoted levers operatively connected with the respective diaphragms and adapted to be moved in opposite directions thereby; a link connecting the adjacent ends of said levers; one of said levers being connected with the valve stem; and an adjustable Weight on the other lever.
