As shown in the drawing the brake switch device comprises a casing 1, having a chamber 2 containing avertically disposed, rotatable shaft 3, which is adapted to be operated by a lever handle 4. The upper end of the shaft 3 extends through a bearing opening formed in the top wall of the casing, while the lower end oi. said shaft extends through an opening termed in the lower wall, the shafthavinga bearing. in the bushing 5. secured in the lower wall of the casing. W'ithin the chamber 2 and adjacentthe bushing 5, a cam 6 is secured to the sha'ft3 by means of a pin 7. Loosely mounted on the rod 1 1 and supported by the head 16 are discs 17 of insulating material, having an interposed contact disc 18. The lower end of the shaft 3 is chambered to receive a coil spring 19 which acts to press the discs against the head 16.
The contact disc 18 is adapted upondownward movement to bridge two fixed contacts 20, said contacts being connected to a circuit (not shown), which controls means for effecting the sanding ot the rail. The contacts 20 are mounted in a member 21 .pf insulating material, said member being secured to lugs 22 extending outwardly from the enclosing wall of chamber 15. Downward movement of push rod 1 1 is opposed by a spring23 mounted between a cover plate 24:, adapted to close chamber 15, and a thrust member 25, having a conical p1.'o ect1on26 adaptedto centrally engage the red head 16, In order to insulate theterminals 27 of the contact 20 from the spring 23, a sleeve 28 ofinsulating material is mounted on the cover plate 24; in such a manner as to extend upwardly'between said terminals and spring.
For rotating the shaft 3 and for operating the push rod 14, a removable handle device is provided comprising a sleeve 30 adapted to be applied to the upper end of the shaft 3 and, having a handle carrier portion 29 to which the lever handle .4: is pivot-ally connected by apini39. v I

For the purpose of locking the lever i in its. operative pdsition, a radially disposed plunger pin 47 is provided, which is adapted to engage in a groove 49 formed in the sleeve portion 30. A spring 48 is interposed between a washer 50, secured to the plunger pin, and the interior surface eta member 51, having screw-threaded engagement in the casing, and
urges the plunger pin a7 into engagement with the groove 49. The plunger pin ex: tends through the outer wall of the member 51 and is provided with a pull button 52, by means of which the plunger pin 47 may be pulled out of engagement with the groove 49 in the lever sleeve 30.
Contained in a chamber 53, formed in the casing 1, is a double beat valve 54-,having at one side a fluted stem 55 extending through a bore in the bushing 56 and into a chamber 57, the bushing 56 beingsecured in the casing wall by screw-threaded engagen'icnt, and having at the opposite side-a solid stem 58 extending into thechamber 2 through the bore in a bushing 59. The chamber 57 is closed by a cap nut 66 having screw-threaded engagement in the casing, said cap nut having a chamber in which is slidably mounted a plunger 61 adapted to engage the valve stem 55. Interrmsed between the cap nut 60.and plunger 61. is a spring 62 tending to hold the double beat valve 5 seated, in the position shown in the drawing.
Pivotally mounted on a bolt 64 screwed into the lower wall of the :asingl is an arm 63 and slidably mounted in the outer end portion of the arm is a plunger-member 65, which is in. engagement with the valve stem 58. The member 65 is acted uponby a spring 66, one end of which is secured to the arm 63 by 'means or" a screw 67. v A roller 68 is mounted on the arms 63, preferably intermediate the ends of said arm, and is adapted to be engaged by a shoulder 69 of the cam 6, upon counterclockwise rotation of the switch shaft 3.
Mounted in a chamber 75, formed in the casing 1, is a poppet valve 7 4, having a fluted stem 73 adapted to engage the end of an arm 71, which is pivotally mounted on a bolt 72 secured into the lower end wall of the casing 1. The arm 71 is provided with a roller 70, adapted to be. engaged by the cam face 69, when the cam 6 is rotated in a counter-clock wise direction to a su'lticient extent. The valve 74 is adapted to normally seat on an annular seat ring 76 formed adjacent the opening in the caring wall, through which the fluted valve stem 73 extends. The valve chamber is closed by a cap nut 77 having screw-threaded engagement in the casing, and having a central chamber containing a spring 7 8 urging the poppet valve 74% to its seat against the seat ring 76.
In order to define the various braking positions of the lever t, the cam 6 is provided with a plurality of notches 7 9 adapted to be engaged by aplunger'like member 80, which is slidably mounted in a bushing 81 secured in the wall of the casing. Interposed between a cap nut 82, having screw-threaded engagement in the casing, and the bottom of a recess 83 formed in the member 80, is a spring 43 urging the member toward the notches 89. The guide portion of the member 80 is provided with a longitudinal slot 8% into which a stop pin 85 projects. Said pin is secured in the wall of the casing and bushing 81 and prevents the plunger member from falling out of tion.
A spider-like member 86 is secured to the insulating sleeve 9 by a clamp 87, through the ends of which, cap screws 88 are adapted to pass and the spider member by screw threaded engagement. In order to locate the spider in a predetermined position relative to ilace )rior to assemblin the cam 6 in 3osithe insulating sleeve 9, a dowel pin 89 is mounted in the spider and is adapted to enter a corresponding opening in the insulating sleeve. v i
The spider 86 is provided with a plurality of radiating contact members 90, located in dii'lerent planes relative to each other, and
adapted to engagedillerent flexible contact fingers 91 in diiterent positions of the spider, as the spider is rotated by the handle lever 4. The contact fingers 91 aresecured to an insulating member 92, fixed on the side wall of the casing, and are co'nnected'wit-h circuit wires 93, which wires are brought together at the bottom of the chamber 2 and from thence port 95 having an opening 96 through each end, through which bolts, screws or other securing means may be passed for mounting the brake switch device in acar.
Preferably associated with the brake switch device is a door selector switch mechanism comprising a casing 97 secured to the casing of the brake switch device by bolts 102, and having a chamber 98 containing a vertically disposed shaft 99, rotatably extending through the upper and'lower walls of the casing and adapted to be operated by a removable lever handle 100 mounted on the upper enclosed end 111 of said shaft. sleeve 101, of insulating material, is contained in chamber 98 and is secured on the shaft 99 by means of a pin or rivet 103. A spider 104 is secured to the sleeve 101 in the same manner as the spider 86 is secured to the sleeve 9 in the brake switch device, said spider having a plurality of radiating contact members 105 located in different planes relative to each other and adapted to engage a plurality of flexible contact fingers 106 in different positions of the handle lever 100. The contact fingers 106 are secured to an insulating member 107 mounted on the side wall of the casing 97, said fingers being con nected with electric circuit wires 108, which are adapted to pass through the opening 94 in the lower wall of the casingl of the brake switch device and from thence to door control magnets operation of the car doors.
Thelever handle 100 is provided with an enlarged end 109 having a recess containing two pins 110, which, when the lever handle I like member 113 is adapted to be projected by the pressure of a spring 114. The member 113 is contained in a chamber 115 of a bracket 116 mounted on the casing 97, and has a stem 117 projecting through the end wall of chamber 115 and secured to the outer end of said stem' is a button 118 for manually pulling the plunger 113 outwardly, in order to permit removal or applicationof the lever handle 100. The bottom of the slot 112 is provided with recesses 119, which the plunger 113 is adapted to engage, in order to define the various positionsof the lever handle. In operation, the brake switch device is manipulated in substantially the same manner as the brake switch device disclosed in my (not shown) for controlling the The enlarged previously mentioned, prior pending application, Serial No. 235,450, filed November 25,1927.
After the lever handle 4 is applied to the shaft 3 by inserting the sleeve portion 30 through the opening in the upper end wall of the bonnet 31, in such amanner that the lug 35 in the sleeve passes through the notch 37 in the bonnet, then the brakes on the car (not shown) may be controlled by rotating the handle 4, such rotation being limited by engagement of the lug 35 on. the sleeve with the stop lugs 38 in the bonnet, and causing engagement of the radiating contact members 90 on the spider with the contact fingers 91, in various positions, in accordance with the brake operation desired.
In one position of the lever handle 4, such a as service position, the shoulder 69 on the cam 6 engages the roller 68 on the arm 63 and operates said; arm in such a manner as to shift and seat the double beat valve 54 in the position opposite to that shown in the drawing, in order to cut off communicationfrom the en'iergency pipe to the pilot valve so as to prevent an emergency application of the )et valve 74 in order to ermit-fiuid under 7 pressure to be ventedfrom the valve chamber and the emergency valve piston chamher, so as to cause an emergency application of the brakes. 1 v i The sanding mechanism (not shown) may be operated at any time to sand the rails of the track, since in all positions of the lever handle 4, said handle may be depressed and cause The selector door switchdevice is adapted,

It will be noted that relative movement is provided between the arm 63 and the valve operating spring 66, so as to prevent variations in dimensions of the'cooperating, operating parts for affecting improper operation of the double beat valve 54.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a brake controlling device, the combination with an operating shaft, of a removable handle device comprising asocket member adapted to be applied t said shaft and a handle pivotally connected to said member.
2. In a brake controlling device, the combination with. an operating shaft, of a removable handle device comprising a socket member adapted to be applied to said shaft and a handle pivotally connected to said member for rotating said member and thereby said shaft. I

handle pivotally connected to said member, and a latch for locking said member against removal.

In a brake controlling device, the combination with an operating shaft, of a removable handle device comprising a socket member adapted to be applied to said shaft, a handle pivotally connected to said member, and an aX1ally movable rod disposed in said shaft and adapted to be actuated by pivotal movement of said handle. a

In a brake controlling device, the combination with an operating shaft, of a removable handle device comprising a. socket member adapted to be applied to said shaft, a handle pivotally connected to said member, a plunger disposed in the socket of said member and operably by pivotal movement of said handle, and an axially'movable rod disposed for rotatin said shaft, a thrust washer movable with said shaft and engaging a bearing face on said casing, and a sprmg acting on said shaft and urging said washer into engagement with. said bearing face.
9. In a brake controlling device, the combination with a rotatable shaft and a handle device for rotating said shaft, of a cam member carried by said shaft, a pivoted arm operable by said cam upon rotation of said shaft, a valve, a member for operating said valve, and a spring carried by said arm for operating said member and thereby said valve.
10. In a brake controlling device, the combination with a rotatable shaft and a handle device for rotating said shaft, of a cam member carried by said shaft, a pivoted arm operable by said cam upon rotation of said shaft, a valve operated by said arm upon a predetermined rotative movement of said cam, an additional pivoted arm, and an additional valve operated by said arm, said additional arm being operated upon a further predetermined rotative movement of said cam.
11. In a brake controlling device, the combination with a rotatable shaft, of a handle device for rotating said shaft, an axially movable rod mounted in said shaft and operable by said handle, an electric contact member carried by said rod, and a spring for yieldingly maintaining said member in position on said rod.
12. In abrake controlling device, the combination with an operating handle, of a rod operable by said handle, fixed contacts, a movable contact member mounted on said rod for engaging said fixed contacts, and a spring for maintaining said contact member in engagement with the fixed contacts, upon movement of said rod relative to said member.
