IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR IMPREGNATING TIMBER WI TH ANTISEPTITIFLUIDS.

State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Device for Impregnating Timber with Antiseptic Fluids, &c., of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings inakinga part of this specification, in Which Figure 1 is a transverse section of the ap-- paratus. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a detached section.

The nature of this invention relates to the impregnation of timber with antiseptic fluid and other chemical agents 3 and the object of the invention is to facilitate the process of charging the timber with antiseptic agents by means of a certain apparatus, the construc tion and operation of which are as follows:
In the drawing, N represents a metallic cap, in the crown of which is inserted an inductionpipe, M, communicating with the inside of the,
cap, and to which may be' attached a tube, L, by a unionnut, n. The inner edge of the cap is lined with a gasket, K, Fig. l, which may be of rubber or other suitable material. J are lugs projecting from the" sides of the cap, and to which are attached draw-rods I, which may be more or less in number; four, however, are shown in the drawing. To the opposite end of said rods is attached a clamping-band, H, consisting of a pair of straps, connected to each other by bolts and nuts G, Fig. 3, passing through the cars a of the straps composing the clamping-band.
The practical operation of the above-described apparatus is as follows: The cap N is placed on over the end of a log; said log is indicated by the dotted lines a, Fig. 1. The cap is thereto secured by the clamping-band H, which is put on around the log farther down, so far as the length of the draw-rods I, In-
stead of the clamping-band and draw-rods,
dogging-rods may be used, the pointed ends of which are driven into the sides of the log, thereby dispensing with the clamping-band. A detached view of dogging-rod is shown in Fig. 4.
The fluid to be forced into the timber is introduced into the cap through the tube M, which is driven therefrom into the pores of the timber by a force-pun) p or other power attached to the said tube M. The gasket lining the inside of the cap will prevent the leakage of the cap, and the clamping-band and drawrods (or dogging-rods) will hold the cap from being forced from the end of the log or timber during the application of the power used in forcing the antiseptic agents into the wood.
In the event of more than one kind of anti septic fluid being used for charging the wood, the first having been used, the surplus that may remain in the cap can be drawn t.herefrom through the cock F, to make room for the succeeding charges of antiseptic agents to be used for impregnating the timber.
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The clamping band H and draw-rods. I, in combination with the cap N and gasket K, substantially in the manner as set forth, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the metallic cap at and the internal packing K, secured thereto by a projection or projections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
