In the construction of window screens having metal frames, it is practically necessary, or very desirable to provide a handleon the inner side of the frame by means of which the frame may be raised. The attachment of handles to metal frames of this character, however, present difficulties in several respects, particularly when. the frame is made of extruded aluminum alloy, so that soldering, spot Welding or rivetting is ditlicult or impractical, for various reasons, including labor cost and appearance 1 when finished. Moreover, usually the inner side of the frame must slide close tothe outer side, of one r of the window sashes, usually the upper sash,
so that it is usually necessary thatthe handle be attached in such. a manner that no portion of the handle, or its attaching means, projects beyond the inner or face side of the frame. 1 1.
The object of lily-invention is to provide a simple and effective means for attaching a. handle of the common pull type to a screen frame of metal and particularly of aluminum alloy, so that the handle will not project beyond the inner side surface of the frame and will present a finished appearance, and so that labor cost of making the attachment may be less than, or will not exceed that of constructions previously employed. 1 I accomplish these objects primarily by providing a handle having transversely enlarged beveled end portions, recessing theinner sides of the lower bar of the frame to correspond to said end portions, so that the recesses open to the top edge of the bar, fitting said end portions into the recesses, so that their outer surfaces are flush with the surface. of the screen, andthen forcing the metal of the bar about the recesses inwardly ontothe beveled edges of the end portions, so that the handle is securely attached.

The'edges of said heads are beveled or recessed on, their front sides, forming inclined faces fiand a guide hole 0 is preferably provided at the geometrical center of each head 0; Two shallow circular holes f] are formed inthe inner side of the bar a, each of which is of a. depth equalto thethickness of the heads 0, or of the metal of which i the handle is made, andof a diameter equal to the diameter of said heads, said holes V each being bored in such a position that a portionthea'eof, thru an arcof preferably approximately opens to the top edge of the bar a, as indicated in Fig. 3, and being spaced apart adistance equal to. the distance between said heads 0, so that the said heads may be placed in said holes and. when in position therein, the outer sides thereof will be flush with the front side of. the bar and the handle portion will project above the top edge thereof, and lie wholly in the rear of the front face of the frame. After the handle has been placed in this position, the
metal at the side of each hole gis forced inward onto the beveled'edge f of each head 0, so that the handle is secured to the bar in this position. This is preferably done by employing a punch it having a circular cutting edge e which is beveled on its internal side and. is a slightly greater diameter than that of the holes 9,. In securing each head by this means, the punch is set in concentric relation to the head and then forced into the metal, thereby forming a circular indentation a, therein and forcing the metal at the side of the hole inwardly, so that it is pressed firmly against the beveled surface of the head, and causes the latter to be firmly held against the bottom of the hole. In practice the punch may beprovided with a yielding centering device j, which willbe set into thecentering recess a in the head, so that the out which is formed in the bar will be exactly concentric with the edge of the head onto which-the metal is bent, thus giving the whole construction a finished and attractive appearance- \Vith the above described construction the head portions of the handle will not only be securely clamped against thebottom of the recess in which they are located, but the upper edge portions of theheads, which lie between a diameter thereof which is parallel' tothe top edge of thebam and saidstop edge,
Will engage the correspending top side por tions of the recess g, so that the latter will act as a. shoulder to prevent the head in the recess from. being pulled. upward therein. Conse uently, thehandle is securely fastened to the bar. securing means, therefore, projects beyond the side of thebar, and the entire construction derstood that this is merely descriptive of the most common usage and that the invention is in no way limited to its application: to any particular bar ofthe frame. The invention may also be employed in other relations than that disclosed and claimed.
I claim:
1. In combinationwith the bottom bar of a metal. screen frame, a pull. handle therefor No portions of the handle or its comprising a metal strip having a transverse ly enlargedhead at one end, said bar having a recess opening to one side and to its top edge and said handle being extended into said rccess from. said top. edge and having its head fitted therein, the metal of the bar about the recess being forced into engagement with the edgeof the head, to hold it in position therein.
2. In combination with the bottom bar of a metal screen f amc, a pull handle therefor comprising a metal strip having a flat faced, transversely enlarged head at one end, said bar having a recess therein which opens to one side and into which said head is fitted, the top side of said recess opening to the top edge of the bar, to permit the handle to be disposed in the rear of the front side of the bar, the edge of said head being recessed on its outer side and the metal of the bar about the recess therein being forced inward onto said recessed edge.
3. In combination with the bottom bar of a metal screen frame, a pull handle therefor comprising a metal strap having a flat faced circular end portion of greater diameter than the width of the adjacent portion of the handle, saidbar having a circular recess in one side thereof, corresponding to said end portion and. said recess having a sideopcning to thetop edge of the bar, said handle being extended thru said opening and having its said end portion fitted in said recess and the metal at the side of said recess being forced ontosaid end portion to hold it in position in the recess.
4. In combination with the bottom bar of a metal screen frame, a pull handle comprising a metal strap having a flat, circular end portion of greater diameter than the width of the adjacent portion. of the handle, said liar having a circular recess in one side which opens to the top edge thereof, and of a depth and diameter corresponding to the thickness and diameter of said end portion, said handle extending into said recess from the said top edge and having its said end-portion fitted therein, so that the outer. side of the handle is flush with the side of the bar, and said end portion having its edge recessed at its outer side and the metal of the bar about the recess being forced into engagement with its recessed ed go.
