LOCOMOTIVE FRAME.

This invention relates to the frames or bed members, applied in the construction of locomotive engines, for supporting the boiler and running gear upon the axles thereof, and acting as the means of transmission of the tractive effort exerted b the action of the pressure of steam upon t ie pistons of the engines, from said pistons to the draw bars of the locomotives.
The invention is of the same general charactor as that set forth in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,645,687, granted and issued to the applicant, Alfred WV. Bruce, under date of October 18, 1927, and its object to provide a fabricated structure of such type which shall attain all the advantages of that disclosed in said Letters Patent, with a more efiective disposition of the connecting members.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.

In the practice of the invention, referring descriptively to the specific embodiment thereof which is herein exemplified, there is provided a fabricated locomotive frame structure, herein illustrated as adapted for application in a locomotive of the Pacific or 4-6-0 type. The frame comprises two counterpart side frame members, each having formed integral therewith, arplurality of cross tie sections, said cross tie sections of the two side frame members being disposed between pedestal jaws formed on said members and abutting, at their ends further therefrom, in the middle vertical longitudinal plane of the complete frame. The abutting ends of the cross tie members are rigidly secured together, to constitute a complete fabricated frame or bed structure, by any suitable connecting means, as riveting, welding, or bolts passing through the cross tie sections. The invention also comprehends the association of other members, hereinafter set forth, with the basic structure above specified.
Referring to the drawing, eachof thetwo counterpart side members of the frame comprises, in an integral part, a top rail, 1 pairs of pedestal jaws, l dependin from the top rail in the usual manner, and intermediate pedestal connections, which, while herein shown in the form of bottom rails, 1, of ordinary form, may, if preferred, be upwardly extended above said rail portion. A plurality of cross tie sections, 1, is formed integral with each of the side frame members, said cross tie sections being disposed intermediate the pairsof pedestal jaws, that is to say, between a jaw of one pair and the nearer jaw of the next adjacent pair. The cross tie sec-. tions are machined on their ends further from the side frame members, and are of such length that, when brought into abutment in, or substantially in, the middle vertical lon itudinal plane of the frame structure, file width of said structure shall be thatwhich is desired for the application in the particular design of locomotive in which it is to be applied. The crosstie sections-,when so abutted, are secured rigidly together, in the instance exemplified, by bolts, 2, passing throughendflanges, 1, on the cross tie sections, and nuts, 2, but the invention is not limited to such specific connecting means, as, the connection may otherwise be effected, as riveting or welding. The sections may also, if desired,be
keyed together, to relieve the bolts of Jack-- lng strains. n n
As shownin Fi s. 1, to 4 inclusive, the cross tie sections eaten for the entire length between the edestals, and openings, 1:, are formed in t ieir tops, to reduce their wei ht. In the structural modification shown in 5, th y are of materiall shorter length, and areentirely clear of tie pedestal ]aws between which they are interposed, their ends next the side members being integral with the top and bottom rails thereof.
A steam cylinder, 5, associated valve chest, 5, and cylinder saddle, 4, are formed integral with each of the side members of the frame, and it will be obvious to those familiar with the construction of locomotives, that supports for valve gears, reversing mechanism, and other elements of the equipment of locomotives, may: be similarly associated with the side members.
The interposition of the cross tie membersillo between the pairs of pedestal jaws, as herein described and shown, instead of locating them on the tops of the pairs of jaws, as in Patent No. 1,645,687 aforesaid, presents the advantages of more firmly bracing the side members, in the completed frame structure, and of effecting a better distribution of metal in the integral side members and cross tie sec tions. The construction is also advantageous, in that the disposition of the cross tie sections,
relatively to the pedestals, enables additional transverse members for the support of valve gear parts, etc, to be dispensed with.
The invention claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent 1. In a fabricated locomotive frame structure, the combination of two counterpart side members, each comprising, part, a top rail, pedestal jaws, depending therefrom, pedestal jaw connections, and cross tie sections, each of which projects laterally from one of the side members and is interposed between one of the jaw of a pedestal and the nearer jaw of the next adjacent pedestal, said cross tie sections abutting against counterpart sections on the other side member; and means by which the abutting sections are rigidly secured together.
2. In a fabricated locomotive frame structure, the combination of two counterpart side members, each comprising, in an integral part, a top rail, pedestal jaws, depending therefrom, pedestal jaw connections, and cross tie sections, each of which projects lat erally from one of the side members, and is interposed between one of the jaws of a pedestal and the nearer jaw of the next adj acent pedestal, said cross tie sections having end bolting flanges abutting against counterpart flanges on the other side member; and bolts, passing through the bolting flanges andrigidly securing theabutting sectionsone to the other.

A locomotive frame side member, comprising, in an integral part, a top rail, pedestal aWs, depending therefrom, pedestal jaw connections, and cross tie sections, each projecting laterally from one of the side members, and interposed between oneof the in an integral jaws of a pedestal and the nearer jaw of the next adjacent pedestal, said cross tie sections being adapted for abutment against correspondingly located sections on the other side member.
4. A locomotive frame side member, com prising, in an integral part, a top rail, pedestal jaws, depending therefrom, pedestal jaw connections, and cross tie sections, each projecting laterally from one of the side members, and interposed between one of the jaws of a pedestal and the nearer jaw of the next adjacent iedestal, said cross tie sections having end bolting flanges, adapted for abutment against bolting l'lan es on a corrcspoinlingly located cross tie section on the other side member.
5. A locomotive frame side Hitll'llltl', comprising, in an integral part,.a top rail, pedestal aws, depending therefrom, and cross tie sections, each projecting laterally from one of the side members, and interposed between one of the jaws of a pedestal and the nearer jaw of the next adjacent pedestal, said cross tie sections being ada iited for abutment against the other side frame member.

A locomotive frame side member, conr prising, in an integral part, a top rail, pedestal jaws, (lQPOIltllllg therefrom, pedestal jaw connections, and cross tie sections, each projecting laterally from one of the side mcnr bers, and interposed between one of the jaws of a pedestal and the nearer jaw of the next adjacent pedestal, said cross tie sections having end bolting flan adapted for abutment against bolting flanges on. a correspomlingly located section of the other side member.
7. A locomotive frame side member, comprising, in an integral. part, a top rail, pedcstaljaws, (lepending therefrom, cross tie sec tions, each projecting laterally from one of the side members, and inter-postal betweenone of the jaws of a pedestal and the nearer jaw of the next adjacentpcdestal, said cross tic sections being adapted for abutment against the other side member; and a steam cylinder, located forward of the front pedestals of the side member.
