Description

April 1929. AIL. NELSON I 1,710,234
FURNACE Filed June 15, 1925- Adoz z z. Ad 5022 Patented Apr. 23, 1929.
UNITED STATES ADOLPH L. NELSON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO BOHN ALUMINUM & BRASS PATENT OFFICE.
CORPORATION, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
FURNACE.
Application filed June 15, 1925.
The invention relates to furnaces and refers more particularly to holding furnaces having pots containing molten metal which is removed by ladies.
I-Ieretofore holding furnaces have bee-n constructed in such a manner that when the flame below the pothas eaten away either or both of the portions of the w: llaud pot constituting the connection or joint between theparts, the foreign material such as scale from the wall and the pot has been blown into the pot and the molten metal contained therein, thereby damaging the latter. With my invention this foreign ma terial is deflected. away from the pet so that it cannot enter the molten metal. ,Furthermore this foreign. material is directed downwardly at the outside of the wall so that it will cause no injury to the workman. llith these as well as other objects in view the invention resides in the novel features o construction. and combinations and arrange ments of parts as more fully llGl'GlIliLftGl set forth.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a holding furnace embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a transverse section therethrough;
Figure 3 is a similar View showing portions of the wall and pot eaten away.
1 is the pot of the holding furnace containing the molten metal and having an open upper end. 2 is the wall for supporting the pot with its bottom above the floor so that the flame has free play with the surface of the pot confined within the wall to maintain the molten metal at the proper temperature. The wall is annular and is preferably formed of bricks with the annular metallic ring 3 at its top upon which rests the annular flange 4 at the upper edge of and integral with the pot, the joint between this ring and flange being normally closed.
5 is a metallic ring which rests directly upon the flange 4 and is preferably provided with the depending cylindrical flange 6 for positioning the ring upon the pot. This rin extends outwardl over the rin 8 of the furnace wall and is spaced thereaboi 'e Serial No. 37,314.
and terminates in the downwardly extending cylindrical flange 7, which is located out wardly beyond the outer side of the wall and extends below the ring thereof. IVith this arrangement, the metallic ring 5 rests at all times upon the pot so that in the event that the flame eats away the material of the wall ring orpot flange normally forming the closed joint and escapes carrying with it the foreign material such as scale of the wall or pet, this foreign material carried outwardly over the wall and deflected down- .wardly at the outside thereof so that it cannot enterthc pot and the molten metal therein and will not cause injury to the worlnnan.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a holding furnace, the combination joint therewith, and a ring supported upon said annular flange and extending over said wall and providedivfih a depending flange outside of said wall for deflecting foreign material which might pass outwardly through said joint away from said pot and downwardlyoutside of said wall.
3. In a holding furnace, the combination with an annular wall, of a pot having at its upper edge an annular flange resting upon said wall and normally forming a closed joint therewith, and a ring upon said annular flange and provided with positioning means engageable with the pot, said ring extending adjacent to said joint for deflecting foreign material which might pass outwardly through said joint away from said pot.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature.
ADOLPH L. NELSON.
