Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY H. HUBLEY, OF CENTRAL MANOR, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,022, dated December 14, 1875; application tiled October 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. HUBLEY, of Central Manor, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Adjustment of the Beam in Hill-Side Plows, of which the follow ing is a specification:
The nature of my improvement consists in the arrangement of a vertical and a horizontal screw or feed shaft, having its respective hearings in the sides of an open case or frame for each, combined by a traveling female screw-plate, provided with arms, the one connecting with the heel of the plow, the other with the case of the former, which case is attached to the handle or stilts, to afford greater facility for adjusting'the beam to the right or to the left, as well as to raise or lower the same, as circumstances may demand, in going forward or returning in hill-side plowing, without stopping the plow in so doing.
The accompanying drawing, with the let ters of reference marked thereon, and a brief explanation, will enable those skilled in the art to make and use my devices, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a plow with my devices in place; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same detached.
The beam, standard, handle or stilts, and rounds may be of the ordinary kind, combined, however, by the devices for adjustment, herein more fully explained.
A notch is shown cut out of the under side of. the heel H of the beam, which sets upon an oblong open frame or case, the ends D D of which form bearings for a horizontal screw or feed shaft, the projecting end of which may be provided with a crankhandle, B, or its equivalent, for turning said shaft in'either direction. A traversing nut or plate, E, provided with a female screw, embraces said shaft. This plate E has a vertical rod or leg, F, with a screw end for a nut, Gr, being passed through the heel of the beam, and secured by said nut G. (Shown on the upper side.)
By this arrangement the heel of the beam is made to slide to the right or left upon the upper edge of said casing D, as the feed-screw is turned in one direction or the other, carrying the traveling nut and beam therewith connected.
Said casing D is kept in position by its connection with a stem to a traveling nut, G, entering the case A through a vertical slot, a, and operated vertically by a screw or feed shaft, B, having its bearings in the top and bottom of said case A, which latter case is bolted to the lower end of the handle K of the depressing the beam, but abandoned for the combination shown by Fig. 2.
I am aware that plow-beams have been made adjustable both vertically and laterally by means of slotted plates, binding-screws,
and various devices; hence I do not broadly claim the adjustment produced. But I am not aware that an arrangement consisting of a horizontal and vertical feed-screw shaft, secured in hearings in separate cases, combined by means of stemmed traveling nuts, constructed and operated substantially as herein set forth, were ever before used; therefore,
What I claim as my invention in plows is- In combination with the plow-handles and beam, the case A and its traveling-screw B, for vertical adjustment, and the case D and traveling screw B, for lateral adjustment of the plow-beam, the traversing nuts of each screw being connected by a rigid stem, the whole arranged and operated as and for the purpose specified.
H. H. HUBLEY. Witnesses:
W. B. WILEY, JACOB STAUFFER.
