This invention relates to a cotton cleaner, and the primary object of the same is to providea cleaner, or rather a hull extracting cleaning feeder organization, of a compara- 5 tively simple form which may be installed without materiallyinterfering with the setting of other equipment, or which may occupy the space'now allotted to a standard upright cleaning feeder as employed by gin manufacturers, and to embody therein mechanism for directing cotton'of a bolly character to a boll breaker, or receiving the'cotton direct without passing it through the boll breaker to eliminate dust, dirt and trash therefrom, so that when the cotton is delivered to a distributor or emerges from the improved cleaner for further operation, as, for instance, supply to a gin stand, it will be in an advantageous condition for effective 'ginning and the production of a superior commercial sample grade of cotton.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cotton cleaner having therein means for preliminarily treating cotton of different grades, orfor subjecting hully cotton to the action of a boll breaker, or the treatment of cotton which enters the cleane1 without bolls or smalljportions of bolls without passing through the boll breaker, and to finally treat the cotton of either grade through the medium ofa recleaning means consisting of a plurality of spiked cylinders or rollers with interfitting spike members and a lower screen, proportioned and assembled in such manner as to subject the cotton to further ori'ecleaning treatment 'to anaterially separate dust, dirt and other foreign matter from the cotton before being delivered'to a distributoiy or directly to a gin stand, and to avoid deterioration or injury t0 tl18 cotton treated. v A further object of the invention is to introduce between a recleaning means consisting of a series'of' spiked rollers located at .the lower portion of the cleaner, a saw cylinder and two superposed re-cleaning spiked conveyors in advance of said cylinder and which "receive the hully cotton which has been subjected to treatment by .the boll breaker, the conveyers having the spikes set I in spiral form in reverse position from each other and to the center, to pick the finalloeks of cotton from portions of hulls .or other foreign matter descendingto the said conveyers before the' cotton thus opera-ted upon by the saw cylinder will be subjected to the recleaning means and delivery from the cleaner to a distributor or gin stand.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a rotaryrecleaning means in a cleaner closely associated with preliminary cotton treating devices .to'receive bolly cot ton which has: been partially treated, or cot ton which is of such limited bolly nature as to require only the ordinary gin stand to handle the same, and also other cotton of a highergrade and subject the same to final recleaning devices.
With these and other objects and advantages in View the invention consists in the construction and arrangement ofthe several parts which will bemore fully hereinafter described and claimed. ' Directly below the grating 9. is-a stripper roller 10, the large saw cylinder 11 and a brush cylinder 12. Above and to the right of the roller 10 and cylinder 12 is an inclined deflector or chute 13, while to the right of the saw cylinder 11 and below the'cylinder 12 is another inclined deflector '14:.
A spiked; boll breaker or roller 15 is mounted to theleft and slightly below the star roller 9, and disposed in coactiverelation with and to the left of the saw cylinder removing screw conveyor; 22, or any suitable means such as a pneumatic device.
A series of inclinedly disposed spiked cylinders 23, 24: and25 are provided to receive the cleaned cotton from the chute 13 when the plate 9 is in dotted line position, or from the saw cylinder lland brush 12, when the plate is in full line position; The convoluted' screen 26 is disposed below these irollers andpermits the dust and dirt t'o-fall therethrough, but assists in conveying the cleaned cottonv to the outlet end 27. This outlet end is provided with the manually controlled valve 80, while disposedadjacent to the spiked roller 25 is a valve 28. A door 29; is provided fonacc'ess in cleaning and repairing. Other doors may be disposed throughout, asmay be found necessary.
- The present cleaner is adapted to be supported from the usual gin stand, the top end 31 of which is illustrated.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that the-star roller 9 will cooperate with the grating 9' to assist in breaking up the bollsas the same are delivered through the" fluted rollers 7. Should the valve 9 be in the full line position, the cotton bolls will be broken and delivered to the spiked wheel 15, which, inturn, will deliver themto the spiked wheel 10 and the saw cylinder 11 which, cooperating with the two spiked wheels 16 and 17, will. finally cause the breaking up of the bells and the proper cleaning of the cotton therefrom, the refuse 14 and thence,by means of the re-cleaning' spiked rollers 23, 2 1 and 25, to the outlet 27.
Where it is unnecessary to. break the bolls, the valve 9 is moved to the dotted line position in Figure 1 so that the cotton is delivered directly from the star roller 9 and the grated bars 9 over the deflector or chute 13 its shown in Figure 2,.it will be noted that the spikes on the roller 16 are arranged spirally from the center toward the ends so that the material is conveyed from the ends directly to the spiked rollers 23, 24 and 25.

1. A cotton cleaner of theclass specified comprising a housing having an upper inlet and a side outlet, deflecting means includeither one of two directions, a. grating. co-
operating therewith, a star roller cooperating with thegrating, a boll-breaker-within the housing at the side thereof oppositeto the outlet and to receive the cotton and bolls from the star roller and grating, a cleaning means cooperating with the boll breaker, and a plurality of re-cleaning devices to'receive the cotton either from the firstmeans ordirectly from the valve and star roller and positioned to direct the cotton through the side outlet.
