LOWER DENTAL PLATE.
Application filed April 23,
This invention relates to the manufacture and titling of full lower dentures. and has for its objects the provision of a novel means embodied as a part oi the lower denture whereby the same may be made to provide not only a perfect lit when first made, but which can be readily adjusted or reshaped to compensate for the changes due to shrinkage of tissues.
1n the making of lower dentures it has been the custom to construct them of hard rubber or other similar material, fitting the same to the impression which has already been taken after the extraction of the teeth, and as it is at best a difiicult matter to retain the lower denture in place at any time, it is essential that as per'leet a seal be produced as possible, but in the usual practice, using a hard plate, as the tissue shrinks. the denture must be refitted which can only be done by scraping or cutting away of the hard place where required, which is not only of considerable worlr, but never produces as good a fit or seal at first.
In my present invention I have overcome this difficulty by producing a lower denture that is provided with a piece of sheet metal such as gold, pure tin or other suitable material, which is embedded or cast as an insert into the denture and which projects from the lower edge or lingual wall thereof in the term of a flange of semi-pliable material, capable of being formed or shaped by the proper instruments and designed to retain such shape.
This insert may be in the form of several pieces, and located as desired. or it may be of one piece and extend around the plate, and downward below the mylo-hyoid ridge and back to the rctro-molar triangle.
The object being that by the use of such a flange or extension of the denture, that it can be bent or formed to reduce pressure upon the so l't tissue and conform more closely to the form or shape of said tissue in the desired locality, and thus produce a perfect seal as well as tit and as in this manner of fitting the plate or denture is not cut away the denture is rendered more staple and of greater strength due to the reinforcement by the metal.
It will thus be seen that dentures of this construction can be fitted soon after the teeth have been extracted, and refitted from time to time as shrinkage takes place, thus pro- 1927. Serial No. 185,996.
ducing a more pertect lit without much labor or time in the fitting.
With these and other objects in View, my invention consists in certain const'riution and combination of parts as will ln-reinalter be fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views, and it is understood that slight changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the ll'lVOlllJlOIl. 7
In the drawings:
l igure 1 shows a model of the lower jaw it), and the mylo-hyoid ridge is indicated as at 11, and the retro-molar triangle by the numeral Figure 2 shows a similar view of the model of? the jaw, with the addition of the insert; 13, placed in the same position as it will sume after being secured in the lower denture.
Figure 3 shows a lower denture with the insert 13 secured thereto.
Figure 4 shows one form ol insert before the same has been shaped.
Figure 5 shows the same insert after shaping.
Figure (3 shows a part of a jaw model, with the insert placed thereon.
Referring to the drawings:
In Figure 1 is shown a model 10 ot the lower jaw, and indicated thereon is the mylohyoid ridge 1t. and in my design it is dc sired to extend the plate below and back of this ridge 11, so that a firmer structure of the denture will result, while this has been done in the past both with vulcanitc and metal plates it has not been directed to the proper location.
in my present invention it is my intention to combine in the Vulcanite base that to serve as a lower denture, a plate or casting of the desired form and material, such as metal or other suitable material that will serve to form a seal at the point of Contact between the edge ot' the lower denture and the mucous meml 'ane, thus resulting in suction.
A very large proportion of lower dentures arr not extended to the mylo-hyoid ridge and do not hare the aid of atmospheric pressure in their retention; this being so because the shill required to secure an accurate impression ot this region is not possessed by all dentists, also the change of shape of the alveola ridge, often results in a shifting of the lower denture thus permitting a leak as at 14, but it this part of the lower denture 15 be made of some substance such as pure tin, or gold that can he changed to conform to the needs oi the also, a contact. between the mucous membrane and the edge of the denture can be maintainml, a seal a sured and atmospheric pressure will ar-xsure a more staple lower denture adding much to the. comfort of the user.
In the further use of such extensions or inserts 13 of a workable u'iaterial as above described, and before being: cast in the denture 15, they are formed to api iroximatel fit the model 10 of the jaw for \Vlllt'll they are intended, that is, the tissue ol the localit; against which the adjusting means as represented by said insert 1?) are to impinge, seeking to establish a seal, one at such a character, namely, easily compressed, and ow eupying quite ditlerent positions when at rest and in use, that to achieve the t'ull benefit of the possibilities it might lac ad antagoons to use a method of getting the proper adjusting of the adjusting means". in ill following way: to make the denture with the inserts 13 east therein and in a seniit'ormed condition, and alter fitting it to the jaw. i-l
place some material such as a Wax, or other suitable material, upon the outer surtaee of said insert 13, and then by placing the denture in the mouth of the patient, a ten hours Wear and. use, would conform the wax to a Working shape, then by using plaster of Paris or other means placed in contact with the wax extended sutliciently over the surface of the lower denture Which covers the alreola rid je. a guide is ecure l that Will serve t: coniorm the adjusting means or insert til; or rubber may be vulcanized in the space oeeupicd b the. beeswax, and in this ease the in ert term a support to hold the rulranite, but in this case holes PlUQtllY lo- .iilli si e would hav to be made in the insert 13 in the proper lot-ality.
Hz'u'ing thus do "ilied my invention, what: i: elaim as new and desire to seeure by Lettars Patent, is:

In testimonv whereof I hereunto atlix my :-l en a tu re.
