R. w. HEATH METHOD OF MAKING DENTAL PLATELMOLDS AND DENTAL PLATES Filed June 18, 1926 INVENTOR [2 W ital/i BY 2 1p d E I v ATTQRNEYS method b I Patented June 26, 1928.
UNITED STATES ROY w; BEA-TH, or xALAMAzoo, MICHIGAN.
METHOD OF MAKING DENTAL-PLATE MOI DDS AND DENTAL PLATES.
Application filed June 18,
The main object of this invention-is to provide an improved method ;of mak ng dental plate ,molds and dental plates which is well adapted for roofless plates.
A further. ob'ect is to provide an improved method of maltin'g dental plates which results in securing a'plate, which eflectively retains its position in the mouth and is comfortable for the wearer."
A further object is to provide an improved which dental plates may be properly tted to the conditions of the individual.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my improved process will definitely appear-from the detailed description to follow. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
. The various steps of my improved process are clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which: 7
Fig. 1 is a top perspective view of a roofless dental plate made in accordance with in improved method.
ig. 2 is a perspective view of an impression tray of standard type.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the first step in preparing the dental tray for taking the impression.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the tray asprepared in Fig. 3 with the cast or impression therein.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cast removed from the tray.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a chart of the diagnosis of the patients mouth.
' Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view of the cast or model as prepared for makinv the plate.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view s lowing the wax model as formed upon the cast.
It will be understood that'the drawings are mainly conventional and are designed to illustrate the "steps of my improved method.
In the practice of my improved method a dental tray 1 such as that shown in Fig. 2 is prepared for taking the impression by applying wax indicated at 2 to theflan es of the tray, the wax being molded to build up the flanges and conform them to the interior cheek muscles at the base of the gums. T also preferably build up therear of the tray at 3 with wax to protect the soft palate.
1928. Serial m5. 116,880.
. With-the tra thus prepared an impression 4.0f plaster 0 Paris or other suitable material is made in the usual manner, care being'taken, however, to take aclose impres- -s1on.
Either before or after taking this impression the mouth of'the patient is diagnosed thereon indicating mouth conditions.
The surface of the model is cut away as indicated in Figs. 5 and 7 to a degree correspondin to the degree of softness of the tissue; dial? is, little if any ofthe surface of the model is removed where the plate to be formed is to be supported by a relatively hard tissue. The amount removed 'varies, as stated, in proportion to the degree of softness of the tissue.
.With the model or cast formed in this way the plate may be formed by the usual or any desirable methods. Experience has shown that the resulting plate is comfortable to the wearer and very effectively maintains osition or remains in position. aving thus described my lnvention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- its ters Patent is:
1.. The method of preparing dental plates COIlSlStlllg Of applying wax to the flange of, an impression tray and conformin to degree of softness of the corresponding plate supporting surface, and forming the plate 7 from the, model thus prepared.
2. The method of preparing dental plates consisting of applying wax to the flange of an impression tray and conforming to the interior cheek muscles at the base of the gums, makin a plaster model in the tray thus produce cutting away the surface of the model in varying degrees corresponding to the degree of softness of'the corresponding plate supporting surface, and forming the plate from the model thus prepared.
3. The method of preparing dental plates consisting of applying wax to the flange of an impression tray and conforming to the interior cheek muscles at the base of the gums, making a plaster model in the tray thus produced, diagnosing the mouth of the patient to ascertain the relative hardness of tissue in the plate supporting surfaces thereof, cutting away the surface of the model in varying degrees corresponding to the degree of softness of the corresponding plate supporting surface, and forming the plate from the mo'del'thus prepared.
4. Themethod of preparing dental plates consisting of making a model of the mouth, diagnosing'the mouth of the patient to'ascertain therelative hardness of tissue in the plate supporting surfaces thereof, cutting away the surface of the model in varying degrees corresponding to the degree of softness of the corresponding plate supporting surface, and forming the plate from the model thus prepared.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ROY W. HEATH.
