I l The present invention primarily has in View the production of a rail joint bar which 'may be economically produced by standard rolling practice, including structural modification which permlts'ofa substant1al lightening of the section wh le possessing a more effective distribution of the metal to allow of a saving in cross sectional area without matenally diminishlng or reduclng the stiffness'and strength of the resulting bar.

In the manufacture of a joint bar embodying the improved features of the present invention, the simple alteration of the surface form may be readily effected in the rolling operation, from which it results that the bar is susceptible of economical productionand results in a bar affording material improvements as to economical distribution of metal employed.
As will be readily understood, the primary feature of the invention is necessarily susceptible of application to various shapes and types of joint bars, and further susceptible of modification as to the extent of its use upon the respective surfaces of the bar, but as herein disclosed in its preferred form, is enibodied with the major ortion of the nonbeariiig surfaces of the ar so as to obtain themaximum values therefrom, while preservingthe conventional portions of the bar unaltered so as to be fully and properly etfectiveqfoitheir desired purposes.
In Fig; 3 t-here is illustrated a suitably modified form of the improved splice bar wherein the outer face of the web portion is provided with upper and lower longitudinally extending shoulders 10, 11 having a. concaved or grooved portion therebetween. As shown, said shoulders 10 and 11 are spaced to be engaged by the washers 12 at the outer edges thereof whereby upon tightening of the usual securing nut 13 the washers are subjected to a distortion or deflection contributing to thesecuring value thereof.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A splice bar for railjoints having its. bearing portions of standard contour with plane surfaces and having non-bearing portions formed with a series of alternate, longitudinally extending rib and groove surfaces, substantially as described.
2. A splice bar for rail joints of uniform section having its bearing portions of standard contour with plane surfaces and having non-bearing portions formed with a series of alternate, longitudinally extending rib and groove surfaces, said ribs and grooves being 1 of curvilinear cross-sectional contour.
5. A splice bar for rail joints of uniform section having its bearing portions of standard contour with plane surfaces and having its major non-bearing surfaces of contiguous, longitudinally extending rib and groove formation. 7 l

9. A splice bar for rail joints of uniform section having a vertical web portion having its outer surface formed -with upper V and lower shoulders longitudinally extending EMIL CARL ZIMMERMAN.
