IMPROVEMENT IN FINING AND COOLING LARD IN CASKS FOR TRANSPORTATION.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170.935, dated December 14, 1875; application filed July 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD BULLYMORE, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a certain Improvement in Process for Fining and Cooling Lard, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention consists in the process for forcing a current of cold air through the liquid lard after it is filled into the barrel or cask for shipping or storing, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 a top plan view, of the apparatus for carrying out my improved process.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A represents a barrel or cask, in which the lard is packed for storing and shipping. B is an air force-pump of any suitable construction; b, the suction-pipe, and c the dischargepipe thereof. The descending portion or nozzle of the latter is, preferably, made removable, so as to be inserted into the barrel contraining the lard, and then to be connected to the force-pump by screwing it into the elbow at the end of the horizontal portion of the dischargepipe, as shown in Fig. l, or in any other suitable manner. D is an opening, formed in the upper head of the barrel, to permit the escape of the air therefrom. The lard is filled into the barrel in a more or less liquid and warm stat when the air-pump is moved up to the barrel, and the nozzle of the discharge-pipe inserted into the same, so as to reach to within a short distance from the bottom of the barrel. Upon actuating the airpump a current of cold air is discharged through the pipe 0 into the mass of liquid lard near the bottom of the barrel, which aircurrent is diffused therein, and, rising to the top of the barrel, escapes therefrom.
By this means the entire mass of lard contained in the barrel is thoroughly stirred or agitated while cooling and congealing, thereby preventing the lard from acquiring an uneven or coarse grain, which it will if allowed to cool and congeal without being agitated, as heretofore practiced. By this fining of the lard its market value is enhanced, and its salability greatly increased.
In warm weather either the suction or discharge pipe of the air-pump may be connected with a suitable refrigerator or cooling device, so asto thoroughly cool the air before entering the lard.
I am aware that, previous to my invention,
lard has been treated in tanks and other vessels by forcing an air-current through it, for the purpose of drying and cooling the same. The lard so treated has, however, to be drawn off from these tanks or vessels into the packing casks or barrels in a-comparativel y warm and liquid state, as otherwise it would not flow freely. In cooling in these barrels or casks, the lard so treated acquires an uneven and coarse grain, which greatly injures its appearance, and which objectionable result is entirely avoided or remedied by my improvement.
I claim as my invention- In the manufacture of lard, the process of forcing a current of cold air through the liquid lard after it is filled into the barrel or cask for shipping or storing, whereby the lard is thoroughly agitated while cooling and congealing, thereby producing lard of fine and pven grain, substantially as hereinbefore set 'orth.
