UNITED STATES CHARLES HUMPHREYS STONE, DECEASED, LATE OF MUSCATINE, IOWA, BY SUSAN FITCH STONE, ADMINISTR-ATRIX, OF MUSCATINE, IOWA.
HARROW ATTACHMENT.
Application filed October 31, 1927. Serial No. 229,994.
The invention aims to provide a novel form of attachment for toothed harrows, en'ibodying a wheel for disposition at a front corner of the harrow to travel upon the ground and prevent catching of said corner in the ground when the harrow is sharply turned, thus effectively preventing it from tipping over.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the class set forth which may be quickly and easily applied to one of the usual tooth-carrying rock shafts of a harrow and will function to elevate the front end of said harrow when said shafts are turned to direct all of the teeth almost horizontally rearward, thus facilitating dragging of the harrow from one point to another without seriously mutilating the ground over which it is being drawn.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the attachment applied to a harrow, portions of the latter being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through a portion of the harrow on line 33 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, showing a rear elevation of the attachment.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on line H of Fig. 2 and Fig. 3.
The numeral 5 on the drawing denotes a portion of a harrow frame, 6 has reference to the usual rock shafts carrying the harrow teeth 7, and the numerals 8, 9 and 10 refer to parts of the conventional means for turning the rock shafts 6 at will to vary the angle of the teeth 7 with regard to the frame 5. The attachment constituting the gist of the present invention, is mounted at the right front corner of the harrow on one end of the foremost rock shaft 6, and if desired another of these attachments may be similarly mounted at the left hand front corner.
The attachment embodies a vertical standard 11 upon whose lower end a fork 12 or other wheel-carrying member, is swiveled, said member 12 being provided with a ground engaging wheel 13 of wood or metal. Upper and lower clamping jaws 14 and 15 are mounted for relative vertical movement upon the standard 11, said jaws being shown in the form of wooden blocks having openings 16 through which said standard passes, the upper block 14 being freely slidable along said standard, whereas the lower block 5 may be supported directly or indirectly by a part of the swivel connection 17 between said standard and the wheel-carrying member 12. A nut 18 and preferably a washer also, are provided on the standard 14 for the purpose of downwardly moving the jaw or block 14 into clamping relation with the lower jaw or block 15, so that these jaws may be utilized in clamping said standard to the proper one of the shafts 6. To provide for the desired angular relation between the standard 11 and the teeth 7, an arched or U-shaped clip 19 is secured upon shaft 6 by a bolt 20, the crown portion of said clip being engaged by the upper jaw or block 14 while the ends thereof contact with the lower jaw or block 15, the arms of said clip being of different appropriate lengths to obtain the desired angular setting of the standard 7. Moreover, by having the jaws 1415 engage the ends of this clip, it is insured that there shall be no turning of the standard and jaws about the shaft 6 by which the attachment is carried. Preferably, the outer lower corner of the block or jaw 15 and the upper outer corner of the lower jaw or block 15, contact with the adjacent tooth clamp 21, so that the latter assists in holding the entire attachment against lat eral movement away from the frame 5.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that a very simple and inexpensive at tachment has been provided, that said attachment may be quickly and easily applied, and that it will be highly efficient for the purposes hereinbefore set forth. As excellent results are obtainable from the details disclosed, they may well be followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
What is claimed is:
1. In a harrow havinga tooth-carrying rock shaft; a clip secured around said rock shaft, a caster wheel spaced from said rock shaft, and attaching means for said caster wheel embodying spaced jaws at opposite sides of said shaft, at least one of said jaws being non-rotatably engaged with said clip.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1; said clip being of U-shape with relatively long end short arms whose ends abut said one 3 3. In a harroW attachment, a U-shaped clip to surround a rock shaft of a harrow and a bolt passing through both arms of said clip for drawing them together to clamp the clip on the shaft, said arms projecting difierent distances from said bolt for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature. 7
