April 9, 1929. o. A. HANsoN GAS RANGE Original Filed May 20. 1925 MQ/M Patented Apr. 9, 1929.
UNITED STATES OSCAR A.. HANSON, OF ROCKFOR-D, ILLINOIS.
Gas RANGE.
Application aie-a Mey 20, 192.5, sei-iai This invention relates to improvements in gas ranges and its object is to provide a gas range including means whereby the gassupply valve may be opened by placing a cooking vessel, or the like, upon the table of the range; saicL gas-supply valve normally remaining yieldingly closed.
A further object is to provide locking means that may be detachably secured to said gas-supply valve to positively retain the same in open position when desired.
A further object is to provide a gas range that is economical in the use of fuel, simple in construction, of few parts and etlicient in operation.
Vitli the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, aarticularly pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which- F ig. 1 is a view of the gas range in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the table and burner.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating a gas burner shield employed.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of one of the supporting legs of the range table. v
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 denotes the top or table of the range supported upon legs 2 of hollow construction, said legs telescoping into the sleeves 3 and terminating in flared heads A that rest upon the expansion coil springs 5 arranged within said sleeves. Posts 6 extend through said sleeves, springs 5 and legs, and the enlarged bases 7 of said posts being disposed at the lower ends of said sleeves receive the lower ends of the springs 5. The springs 5, then, carry the weight of the legs and table and yieldingly retain the table at a. predetermined height above the sleeves.
A span bar 8 extends across the table, just below the top, and is secured to the sides thereof, a pitnian 9 connecting said span bar to one end of the bell-c-rank-lever 10 that is fulcrumed upon pin 11 carried by the casting 12 arranged upon the floor..A A reach rod 153 connects the opposite end of No. 31,579. Renewed oeteber e, 1928.
the bell-crank-lever to the gas-supply valve 14 arranged in the service pipe 15 that is tapped into the main gas pipe 16 provided with the control valve 17, said service pipe 15 being connected b the flexible pipe 18 to the stein 19 of tie H-type burner 2O formed with the perforations 21, and supported by the table 1.
lVhen a weight, such as a. cooking utensil or the like, is placed upon the table 1 in the usual manner it will sufiiciently depress the same, thus contracting the spring 5, to cause the bell-crank-lever and reach rod 10, 13 to open the gas-supply valve 1/1 admitting gas to the burner. An ordinary pilot (not shown) is provided in connection with this burnei: in the usual manner. When the cooking utensil is removed from the table 1 the latter will again resume its normal position through the return action of the spring 5 thus causing the bell-crank-lever and reach rod to close the valve 11.1..
A shield 22 inverted-dish shaped is supported upon legs 23 immediately above the central portion, or cross bar, of the H- shaped burner. In the event that the contents of the cooking utensil should boil over the shield will protect that portion of the burner covered thereby from such contents thus preventing the same from extinguishing the gas at points directly therebeneath. Should the said overfiow from the cooking utensil evaporate from the heat of the burner or pass therefrom otherwise and again permit escape of the gas from all of the perforations of the burnerthis gas will immediately be ignited by the shielded flame beneath the member 22.
A metal yoke or bracket 2-1 is secured to and depends from the main gas pipe 1G and carries a push button 25 having a hooked end 26, said button having secured thereto a collar 27 to which one 'end of the coil spring 28 is secured that encircles said button and abuts the said yoke. The purpose of the spring being to yieldingly retain the button in an adjusted position relative to the yoke, the hooked end 2G of said button being adapted for releasable engagement with the valve 14, in the open posit-ion of the same, to retain said valve open. The push button, which may be rotated as well as pushed inwardly, is manually placed in engagement with the valve when it is desired said button should function. It is manually disengaged from said button when CII desired. Grdinarily the Vpushv button doeg not function as the ordinary operation of the table will not cause engagement of the said button and the gas-supply valve'.
W'hat is claimed is In a gas range, a square table, sleeves' be'- loW the corners thereof, lege depen-ding fromthe corners of said table into said sleeves, expansion coil springs With-in said. sleeves yieidfingly supporting said legs in a fpredetermined position relative to eaidvsieeves, a burner Carried Centra-ily o-' saiid- 't-a1b1e-a Aservice pipe conneetinzg,` said burner and the. -ga's sitpply, eaid service pipe vcomprising a; fienibleportion, n gil-s supply valve inc Saidfserv-V ice pipe beyond said 'flexible portion Withl respect 15o-said table, a; beil-crank-lever diieposed centrally of and beneath smid table, a pitman connecting said beH-crank-lever and. table, a reach rod connecting)- Said belieranifleyer and gas supply valve for normally opening and closing the same, and means for yieldingly retaining said gas suppl-y valve in Wide open position and arrestingthe movement of saidy reach rod and conneet-iensfsafid mea-ns comprising a hook cepavbi-e of engagement with seid gas supply yal-ve but y'iel-d-i'ngiy `retained ont of operative association' therewith, all substantially as, :vnd for At'hepurp'ose set forth. l
In: testimony that I Cini-m the foregoing as my own- I'heve hereto aiiixed .my signature'. v v v y @SCAR A..
