My invention relates to improvements in mail boxes, and particularly that type adapted for rural free delivery service. lt has for one of its object the provision of a money or coin receptacle attachment for placement in the box and of such construction to enable the mail carrier to remove the money contents with a minimum expenditure of eil'ort and time.

For the purpose of disclosing my invention l have illustrated one embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawiV 1. in which,

ln the embodiment of my invention l provide a mail box 1 of the usual rural free delivery type having the rounded top and provided with a door 2 at its front to permit access thereto and with the usual signal flag 3.

The money receptacle is adapted to be placed within the box and suspended from the top thereof so as to leave the bottom part of the box free for the insertion of delivery mail.

1n constructing this receptacle l provide a p guide and supporting member for the money drawer, which is preferably formed from a single piece of sheet metal in which the metal is turned up vertically from the bottom 4 to provide vertical sides 5. The metal is then turned outwardly as at 6 and then bent slightly downwardly at 7 so that the parts 6 and 7 form supporting flanges, the flanges 7 being at such an ano'le as to conform substantially to the slope of the top of the box. This guide and supporting member is secured in position by means of bolts 8 which pass through the top of the box and through the flanges 7. At

'lhe forward portion of the guide support for the money drawer is covered by a coverplate 10 which, at its rearend is provided, intermediate of its two sides, with a tongue 11 forming a guard for thev return spring of the money drawer and on each side with a pair of extended tongues 12 which increase the bearing surface of the cover plate on the flange portion G. The front end of this cover plate is provided with a pair of forwardly extending tongues 13 which are turned over the forward edge of the flanges 6 to secure the cover plate in position at the front and the cover plate, at vits rear is secured in position by Ymeans of bolts let passing through the plate and the flanges 6. At each side of the tongue 11 the metal of the plate 10 is bent downwardly at rightangles to the plate to form the backing tongues 15 to which :is secured, by means of bolts 16,'

The money drawer is preferably formed from a single sheet of material., being bent up from the bottom 18 to form the sides 19, which side portions at their tops are again bent inwardly as at 20. 'lhese side portions at their forward ends have Vout-turned ears 21. The rear portion of the bottom 18 is bent upwardly as at 22 toform the back, and inwardly as at 23 to form a vpartial back cover. At the angle between the bottom 18 and the back 2; the metal is slit on L aralel lines and the material between'these lines is slightly bent outwardly as at 24e, to form a hoolr for the reception ofthe end of a coil spring. 'l`he money drawer lits withinv the guide member beneath the top plate 10 and is adapted to slide back and forth, being drawn to its retracted position by means of a coil spring 25, one end of which is hooked over the end 9 and the other end of which is engaged in the portion 24 of the drawer. The out-turned ears 21 of the drawer engaging the front edge of the vertical portions 5 of the guide prevent the drawer from being retracted too far into the slide, and the drawer is prevented from being withdrawn too far by means of a cross bar 2G 'which extends through slots 27 in the sides 5 ofthe guide and through will eausethe bar 26 to move upwardly in the f slots 28 and thereby prevent the drawer trom being retracted until it is tilted up to a substantially horizontal position. l, Y

A spring holder 29 for collection mail is secured to the under side ci the guide and is preferably formed trom a single piece of wire having a U shaped portion, the two legs et the U at their rear end being coiied to form springs 30 and the wire then continued iorward to form a loop to receive the Asecuring bolts 14C.

I claim as my invention:

l. A money drawer for mail boxes com-v prising a drawer guide having transversely Y extending` flanges for attachment to the box, a Ydrawer slidably and tiltably mounted in said guide, means havinga tendency to retract 'the' drawer to its-non-delivery position, and l means operated by the tilting nioven'ient oi the drawer to its delivery position for render in said retraeting means ineftective'.
