Description

HONE BOX Filed June l5, 1927 Patented Jsigaro 9, 31929.

KONE BOX.
Application led June 13, 1927. S/eral No. 198,575.
My invention relates to holders or boxes for hones or sharpening stones, wherein provision is made for carrying a sharpening stone Within a container, said stone having its opposite faces formed of Shar ening elements differing in quality or grade rom each other, and adapted to be mounted in the box whereby lto readily permit either one or the other of said faces into sharpening position.
An object of the invention is to provide a sharpening stone box comprising upper and lower sections hingedly connected along one edge and also to hingedly attach a sharpening stone upon the same hinges connecting the sections of the box whereby the stone may be moved with either of said sections.
Another object of the invention is to provide a latching means for the various sections comprising the box, said latch cooperating with the frame carrying the sharpening stone, whereby the same may be secured in position with either of the sections or with both thereof when the box is secured in position.
A still further object is to provide means for removably securing the stone within the stone frame whereby to permit the replacing of the stones as the same become worn.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following detailed description.
Tn the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view showing one section of the box in open position.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view with the box in closed position.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line 3--3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4: is a similar view taken along the line 1 4c of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawing, T have shown my invention comprising a sharpening stone box, comprising a pair of similarly formed sections 5, having a pair of hinges 6 arranged along one edge thereof, whereby to hingedly connect said sections. The abutting edges of each section of the box are spaced apart to permit the outer edges of a sharpening stone frame 7 to be interposed therebetween, the edges of the frame and the abutting edges of each of the sections being bevelled as shown in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings, whereby to provide a tightA t between said frame and said sections. At one edge of the frame section is formed hinged sections 8 adapted to be carried on the hinge 10 or the hinges 6 of the box section, whereby yframe from each of the sections.
said. sections and the sharpening stone frame are connected by common hinges.
The mner area of the box section is formed sufficiently large to permit the sharpening 6o stone to be spaced therefrom and between the space and the various sections of the box is arranged a section of absorbent material 9, such as for instance the sponge or the like,
whereby to retain the quantity of oil for supo5 plying a proper lubricant to the stone. rThe sharpening stone is formed into sections comprising a fine stone 10 and a coarse stone 11, the stones being arranged in superimposed relation and firmly secured together by a 7o screw 12, extending laterally from the edge of the stone and adapted to be screw threaded through the adjacent edge of the stone frame 7. The locking nut 13 is formed on the screw adapted to force the stone against the opposite edge of the frame.
Means for locking the box section and stone frame in closed position is provided, comprising latch members 14 carried within each of the box sections at the side opposite from the 8o hinge connection, the ends of each of said latches extending beyond the edge of the respective section on which the same is secured and extending partly through an opening 15 formed in the frame 7 The opening 15 is 85 shoulders in the opening of the frame, where- 9@ by to normally prevent separation of the The latch is preferably formed of spring like material with one end securely fastened to the box section and a pin 17 is formed on each latch extending through an opening in the box section, by means of which the latch may be moved inwardly so as to disengage the same from the frame.
lin operation of the device, it is apparent that the stone frame carrying the sharpening stone will be permitted to be carried by either of the box sections whereby permitting either of the stone sections 10 or 11 to be brought into use.
Tndependent latching means permit the stone frame to be secured in positlon against either of the box sections. Furthermore, the screw connection between the stone sections and the stone frame permits the stone to be removed therefrom and replaced whenever the same become worn.
llt is obvious from the oregoing that various chan es in the size, shape and arrangement of t 1e parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what lt claim as new is:
ln a sharpening stone box, a pair of box sections, a sharpening stone frame interposed between said sections, with the edges of the sections abutting the opposite edges of the frame, hinge members connecting one side of the sections and one edge of the frame, whereby to provide independent swinging moveinroaeoe ment of either of said sections, or the frame, a latch member carried by each of the sections at the side thereof opposite trom the hinge members, releasing pins attached to Said latch members and extending outwardly of the respective sect-ions end a common latch keeper formed in the frame engageable with said latch members whereby to secure the scetions in closed position upon the frame, said latch members being adapted for independent releasing movement upon the depressing of their associated pins.
lin testimony whereof l aix my signature.
