Description

S! E. WINSLOW.
Weighing Scales. v No. 1,708; Patented July 31, 1840.
UNITED STATES PATENT ornion SETH E. WINSLOW, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BALANCE 0B SCALE-BEAM.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,708, dated July 81, 1840.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SETH E. Vmsnow, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Axle for Scale-Beams and for Scales of Difierent Kind; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of my invention.
It consists in making a single axle from a short bar of metal by hammering one side down to an edge, and by turning up the said edge so as to reverse it, or make a semicircular curvature and by filing away this curved part at each end so as to form the bearings (marked B, B, Figure 1) or edges in a line with each other to form one fulcrum. The other fulcrum is formed of the reversed or curved edge (marked C, Fig. 1). This axle is supported at the ends by shackels of the usual form which give the proper support and motion to the beam, marked E,
Fig. 3 or E 0, Fig. l). The axle is also surrounded by shackels somewhat resen'ibling the human ear, (marked D, Fig. 2) having a projection marked upon the inside part so as to form a rest or support upon the fulcrum formed by the reversed or curved edge of the axle.
By this invention the fulcra are placed near each other, and being formed upon one piece of metal are not liable to be disarranged.
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The construction of the single axle with double fulcra for scale beams and other scales in the manner described.
