IMPROVEMENT IN STRAP-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,769, dated December 7, 1875 application tiled October 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA G. REYNOLDS, of the city of Elizabeth, in Union county and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Strap-Hinges, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in making the strapleaf of a hinge in two parts, one end overlapping the other, said ends being corrugated or roughened to prevent their slipping, one of them having elongated holes, through which screw-bolts pass to hold them together and fasten them to the door or gate, the elongated holes being for the purpose of allowing the strap to be shortened or lengthened without removing the hinge from the door; my object being to produce a hinge by the use of which any sagging of the door or gate may be readily taken up without removing the hinge from its fastenings. My object is accomplished by slacking the bolts that pass through the holes in corrugated or roughened ends, and sliding the laps farther onto each other, thereby shortening the strap and taking up the sag.

as shown in the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification.
My invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

A and B are the corrugated or roughened ends of the strap overlapping each other. C and O are the holes through which the bolts D and D pass to hold the parts together. E is a spring, which is covered and held in its positiondn a manner similar to others now in use on other kinds of hinges. I propose to construct some of my strap-hinges with and some Without the spring.
The advantage of my hinge will be readily appreciated by those who have been troubled by the sagging and dragging of doors and gates that have been hung by the ordinary hinge.
I am aware that the art of roughening surfaces for the purpose of more easily holding adjustable sliding plates in position has been known and used, and also that it is not, broadly, new to make strap-hinges laterally adjustable. These I do not claim; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A strap-hinge the strap-leaf of which is made in two parts, the corrugated or roughened ends A and B overlapping each other, and provided with the elongated bolt-holes D and D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
