Description

V. J. REECE.
SCREW-CUTTING DIES. N0.170,76 8. Patented Dec. 7,1875.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VIRGINIUS J. BEEGE, OF GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
' IMPROVEMENT IN SCREW-CUTTING DIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,768, dated December 7, 1875; application filed 7 November 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGINIUS J. Renee, of Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Die, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view, partly in section, of my improved die, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved die that may be readily adjusted and placed directly in the die-stock, dispensing with a number of set-screws and die holders, and reducing thereby the cost of the dies considerably.
The invention consists of a die which has a spreading-pin inserted at the split part of the circumference, and an adjusting-screw passing through the edge of the die to hear at right angles on the pin.
In the drawing, A represents a die of circular shape, which is split at the point of its circumference diametrically opposite to the part which is recessed close up to the circumference, to impart spring action to the split ends of the die. A spreading-pin, B, of cylindrical or other shape, is fitted into corresponding recesses of the split ends of the die, and acted upon by a set-screw, O, that passes at right angles to the axis of pin B through a perforation obliquely to the circumference of one of the split ends.
The adjustment of the set-screw G on the pin spreads the die, while the release of the screw causes, by the spring action of the die, the tight closing of the split ends on the spreading-pin. The die may thus be adjusted and put into the stock without requiring a die-holder for every die.
The one adjusting-screw and pin takes the place of four set-screws heretofore used, so that the number of screws and die-holders is reduced, and thereby the cost for die-stock and die diminished.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A die made with split spring ends, set by spreading-pin and adjusting-screw passing at right angles to pin through one of the split ends of the die, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
VIRGINIUS J. REEOE.
