PHYSICAL-EXEYRCISING DEVICE.
Application filed January 7,1928. Serial No. 245,245.7.
My invention relates `to Vimprovements in lays-ical exercising vdevices specilically those itend'ed to develop the arm and back mus- @ne object ofthis invention is to pro- 5 vide a. simple device to develop arm and back muscles to operate and function in such manner as netto ailect any other part ot the human body.v
another object is Ato provide suitable ad-V regulating -means, permitting be set to` reach any predeter` justing and the device to mined degree orn operating energy and. automatically maintain the so adjusted operating' energy at a constant level.V Still an.- cther object is tol provide visible indicating means for the purpose oit observing the e ltgures and represent still more modi lied 'forms of embodiments of such devices.
The most popular and commonly used devices to s -ngthen and develop arm and back muscles are the well known dumbbells.A
rlhere numerous disadvantages cono l Y .nected with the use ol dumbbells. First a number ot variously sized and Weighted duincbells arey required to meet 'the lvarying requirements et the individual users. Second these sii/.es and weights are by necessity tred and cannot be alteredk or adjusted.V
Third dumbbells in general and especially those ott overweight, unavoidably aitect most et' the other body muscles andvnot intrequentl' are the .cause of rupturesand other serious ali'ections. j y
To overcomeall `of these objections I del vised an arm and back muscle exercising' apparatus which not only is continedto develop only the arm andback muscles, but is also adjustable to meet any desired operating energy requirements andrvisibly indicates the amount ot' energy applied.
It practical embodimento't'vsuch a devicey is illustrated in Figure 1,y andfcomprises the commonly known 5 air` compressing pump a, and theelastic compression tank b. Both members preferably held. in; position upon a basec, by means of a suitable socket c1. A suitable band ,fastenedto the air pump a, may loosely hold the elastic -compression tank. b .in position. A Y suitable check valvey c is interconnecting pump (i and flexible compression tank b permitting the compressed air to enter, yet preventv the escape of air back into pump a. The upper portion oi' the elastic compression tank b is securely fastened to a head piece f providedwith an air escape valvefl, suitably..
regulated by means of compression spring f2 and djusting screw` An air pressure indicating gauge g is also 4securely mounted upon head Communicating channels f4. connects elastic tank b with valvev and gauge g, while an air escape channel f5 permits 'the'discharge of surplus air into the open. w
The device is functioning as follows:
Compression vplunger w1 operated' byv means of connecting rod and handle a?, forces the air 'through check valve e into the elastic sov compression tank l), Where thedesired couni ter pressure is .gradually built up, consequently more and more ene-rgy ris required to operate air pump on. The degree of counterpressure is determined by the pressurespring is exerting upon escape valve fl,- this pressure is regulated by means of screw 'YVhen the so adjusted maximum'pressure is reached inr tank valvefs will open and per- Vmittlie surplus air to escape through channel Oi course the air pressure developed in tank b may be observed at any time upon the dial ot pressure gauge g. Compression `tank b', I preferr to make of elastic material,
as or'instance rubber, to permit the device to'm'orevsmoothly operate and further in crease. the refinement otv adjustment. Of course it is not essentially necessaryto make thecompression tank Z) vof elastic material, and in lFigure 2 another convenient form embodying a rigid compression tank 'b1 is illustrated. centrally located air pumpl ai", andthe rigid compression tank b1 conneet to a vcommon head f6, upon which escape Vvalve and pressure gauge g1 are mounted.
Base plate c2 is directly joined to tank b1. Check'valve'e1 may conveniently be located at the bottom of air pump a3. All other parts are the same as shown in Figure. l.
The functioning and operations of the vari ous members identical With-these of Fig- -ure l.
VAloh 0l' these members are connected by means el' a flexible hose 71,2. The pressure .valve and adjusting screw f3 may locale in any desired position.` The rigid tank can be substitued by an el'asiic tubular ring' c', to obtain the advantages of ghe design n traed and pein'ed out in Figure l.
l/Vliat l cla-iin as new and desire Le seenre by Letiers Patent is: I ln a physical vexerei'sing device' of elle eheracter described, elle cnibination of a suitable air pump, en easic air compression tank, saidv elastic air eompressien JLani; pref# erably made of rubber ofr sinilar lniaerial, a suiable eennnon mounting base for said ail' pump and said elastic tank, a directional check valve suijcably interconnecting said air pump and saidA elas'ic compression tank, an aneni'atieally functioning ressure 'control and regulating `valve arranged to form an integral pari; of said elastic compression tank,l
suitable adjusting means for said regulating i'falre, and a suitable visibly arranged pressure indicating means snicably Yinterconnec'ed Wiili said elastic 'tank 'for' Elie purpose el"v ebservii'ig the air pressnre'W-ihin seid elastic "eanlr, subs'uanially as and lor the purpose set i''orth.
