Description
7 April 2, 1929- c. D. STEWART COMPRESSOR CONTROLLING DEVICE Filed Nov. 10, 1927 INVENTOR CARLTON D.5TEWART BY ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 2, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARLTON I STEWART, 0F BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE TESTING- HOUSE AIR BRAKE COMPANY, OF WILMERDING, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATIQN OF PENNSYLVANIA.
COMPRESSOR-CONTROLLING DEVICE.
Application filed November 10,1927. Serial No. 232,351
This invention relates to fluid compressors as employed to compress fluid into a storage reservoir.
When a compressor is not running, it is desirable that no leakage occur from the reservoir, as the loss of compressed fluid necessitates additional running of the compressor to make up for the leakage and furthermore where a compressor is installed on a motor vehicle, loss of fluid pressure when the vehicle is standing idle may result in fluid pressure not being available for use, such as in controlling the brakes.
Such leakage may occur at the discharge valve of the compressor, and the principal object of my invention is to provide means for automatically cutting of? communication from the storage reservoir to the compressor when the compressor stops runnin In the accompanying drawing, the single figure is a diagrammatic view of a fluid compressing apparatus, showing my invention applied thereto.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates a fluid compressor having a discharge pipe 2, and according to my invention a valve 3 controls communication from the discharge pipe 2 to a pipe 4, through which compressed fluid is supplied to a storage reservoir 5.
The valve 3 has its seat in a casing 6, the pipes 2 and 4 being connected to passages in the casing as shown. For operating the alve 3 a centrifugal governor device 7 may be employed, said governor device being connected with the shaft 8 of the compressor 1. The stem 9 of the valve 3 is carried. by the crosshead 10 of the governor device.
The speed governor 7 and the valve 3 are so adjusted that when the compressor is running, the operation of the speed governor causes the valve 3 to be held open, so that fluid compressed by the compressor is free to flow from pipe 2 to pipe 4 and the storage reservoir 5. \Vhen the compressor stops running, the governor moves the valve 3 to its seat and consequently there will be no leakage of fluid from the pipe 4 and the storage reservoir 5, due to a leaky discharge valve in the compressor or the like. While one illustrative embodiment of the invention has been described in detail, it is not my intention to limit its scope to that embodiment or otherwise than by the terms of the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a fluid compressor and a receiver into which said compressor compresses fluid, of a valve for controlling communication from the compressor to the receiver and a speed governor de viceoperative to hold said valve open when the compressor 1s running and to close. the
valve when the compressor is idle.
2. The combination with a fluid compressor, having a fluid discharge pipe, a reservoir into which said compressor compresses fluid through said discharge pipe, of a valve for controlling communication from said pipe to said reservoir and a speed governor rotating with the compressor for operating said valve to hold the valve open when the compressor is running and to close the valve when the compressor is idle.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand;
CARLTON D. STEWART,
