Description
R. EWALD.
CORNERS FOR TABLES.
Patented Dec. 7,1875.
' NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ROBERT EWALD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE BROWN AND CHARLES F. BLISS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORNERS FOR TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,722, dated December 7, 1875 application filed December 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, ROBERT EWALD, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in the Construction of Tables, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to what are known in the trade as knock-down tables, and consists in a corner-block for the framework of suchtable of peculiar construction, as hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, is a view of my corner-block, seen obliquely from below.
A B is the corner-block, O O the end and side pieces of the table-frame, and D the removable leg. The corner-block A B is formed by gluing together the requisite number of pieces of wood to form the full width of the table-bed, in such a manner that the grain of one piece shall run at an angle with the grain of the neighboring pieces, the whole thus forming a block of the utmost strength and tenacity. One of the side pieces 0 is represented as drawn out a little to show one long mortise and tenon for attaching the said pieces to the corner-block. On the upper end of the tableleg a large round tenon is formed, on which is cut a screw thread corresponding to a thread cut in the block A B from its lower side, so that the leg D may be firmly screwed into said block, and removed at pleasure. The grain of the several pieces A B stands in such relation to the screw-threads that the threads may be smoothly and perfectly formed by ordinary machines, and will' be strongly supported.
I claim as my invention- The corner-block A B constructed of two or more pieces of wood, with the grain crossing each other, as described, and adapted to the reception of the side and end pieces G, and the leg 1), substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of December, 1873, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT EWALD. Witnesses:
WM. 0. DEY, ARNOLD HoRMANN.
