IPRESSING ELEMENT FOR PRESSING MACHINES.
Application ed October 12, 1927. Serial No. 225,794.
This invention relates t-o pressing elements for pressing machines as garmentpressing machine-s and has for its object a particularly simple and etlicient valve mech-- anism for controlling the alternate flow of air and steam to the lpressing 'face of the pressing element.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
.Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View through a pressing element embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional vieW through the valve mechanism.
The pressing element is usually the head of a pressing machine which also includes a buck on which the garment to be pressed is Iii-st laid, the head being movable toward and from the buck. .A 1
1 Adesignates the head or pressing element- ,Which is formed With an internal heating chamber 2 for steam and a lengthwisepchannel 3 within the steam chamber, but disconnected therefrom, the channel opening through the pressing face of the head 1 through' a line of perforations 4. Also, the pressing face is covered with asuitable covering as of Wire mesh 5 Which serves to distribute the steam over the face of the .garment being pressed. A distributing plate (i is preferably carried by the covering 5 and opposed to the jet openings 4. The channel 3 serves as a5eo'liiilii'itjtlirough which either steam or aircan be projected through the jet openings 4f The valve for controlling-the flow of air and steam as here shown includes a valve easing 7 mounted on the head and having an out-let passage 8 in alinement with a passage 9 in the head which passage extends through a web 10 into the channel 3. The casing isalso formed with separated valve chambers 11, 12 both of which open into the inlet chamber 8, these valve chambers being separated by -a partition 13. The upper valve chamber 11 communicates With the source of supply of air through a pipe 14 and the lower valve member 12 communicates through a passage 15, with the steam chamber 2. The flow of steam or air is controlled from the chambers 11 and 12 to the outlet passage 8 by a pair of alternately operable valves having a single handle.
16 designates the valve in the chamber 11, this valve being normally against its seat 17 and having a stem 18 extending to the outside of the casing through a suitable packed gland 19.- The valve is held against its seatby a spring 20 located in a cap 21 which threads into a suitable` opening in the casing. Thevvalve 22 which controls the flow of steam linto the passage 8 from the valve chamber 12 also hasja stem 23 i similar to the stein 18 and varranged parallel thereonand `is'aeted upon by a spring 24 arrangedsimilarly tothe spring 20. The valves are alternately operated `by means ofl a hand lever 25 pivoted at 26 to a bracket 27 on the valve casing, one arm of the lever coacting ywith the valve. stem`1'8 and the other arm with the yvalve stem`23.
Obviously, by moving thehand lever 25 to the lefttheY stem"y of the valve 22 will be opened and steam, will' pass from the steam chamber `2, valve chamber l2, passage 8, channel 3 'through the jet openings 4 and When the handle v25 is moved to the right from its normal position, the steam valve 22 will remain closed and the air v alve opened to permit air to pass from the pipe 14 through the chamber 11, passage 8, channel 3 and the jet openings 4.
What I claim is:
The combination with a pressing element of a pressing machine having an internal chamber for a heating medium and a length- Wise channel having jet openings opening through the pressing face of a pressing element, of a valve comprising a casing mountedon the pressing element :and having a passage communicating with said channel, a pair of separated chambers one being "connected to the internal steam chamber ofthe pressing element and the other having an inlet pipe for compressed` air., normally closed spring pressed valve heads in said chambers and having stems extending to the outside of the easing and a. lever pivoted to the casing and coaeting with said stems on opposite sides of its axis, whereby when the lever 1s rockedin one direction from neutral position, one valve is opened and when it is rocked in the other direction, the other valve is opened.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and in the State of New York, this 12th day of July, 1927.
