The present invention relates to improvements in buck'saw frame attachments and has, 1
reference more particularly to atightening means for assoclation withthe upper endsof the side bars of the frame One of the important objects of the present invention is to providea buck saw frame tightener wherein the tigh'tener can be read-- ily and easily adjusted to permit the proper tension to be obtained whereby to hold the saw blade taut. i p
A further object of the invention is to provide a buck saw frame tighteiier which can be readily and easily attached on the frame with-.
out necessitating any alterations of the frame, the tightener belng further simple in construction inexpensive strong and durable and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Other objects and tionwill become apparent during the course of the following description taken. in connec-e tion with the accompanying drawing.

In the drawin wherein for the )ur )ose of illustration is shown the, preferred embodiment of our invcn'tlon, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the upper portions of the usual side bars of a buck saw frame which is of the conventional construction, the saw blade and the handle associated with the lower end of one side bar, not being shown. 1
Our improved tightening device includes a pair of coacting tightening members desig nated, generally by the numerals and 4 respectively. The member 3 consists of an clongated flat bar 5 that is formed at its inner end with a yoke 6 for. a purpose to bepresently described. A piece of wire bent to form an elongated loop 7 has its free end pivotally attached to the outer end of the bar5, as at" 8, and this loop the upper endof the side bar 1 in the manner as shown in Figure 1.

The, inner end portionsof the bars 9 and 10 comprising the tightening members are formed with a series of spaced registering openings shown at 14'. Furthermore certain of the spacing members 11 are formed in their upper-edges with the notches 15, and the upper edges of the side bars are formed with communicatingnotches shown at 16;
A lever 17 has its upper end offset for disposition through the yoke 6 formed on the inner'end of the bar5, 'and'a pivot pin '18 extends throughj'the sides of the yoke and the adjacent portion of the offset upper end of the lever 17. The upper end of said lever is pivotally secured between the side bars 9 and 10 of themember'by passing a bolt 19'through' predetermined registering openings 14 that are-disposed in parallel spaced 1 formed in the side barsand through an, opening formed in the upper extremity of the lever and the thumb nut 20 is threaded on the,
threaded end of the bolt. In this manner, an
inner-opposed ends of the tightening members x 3 and 4.
The intermediate portion of the lever 17 is l slightly offset as at 21, and a strip 22 has its end portions bentinwardly for attachmentto the inner side of the lever 17 directly adjacent the offset portion 21 and the offset portion 21 secured between the offset portion 21 and the strip 22 as at24.
One edge of the rack bar is formed with the ratchet teeth 25 and the free upper end of this pivotally mounted rack baris disposed upwardly between the side bars 9 and 10 of the tightening member 1, and the ratchet teeth cooperate with the notches "15 to retain the ti htening members in their properly adjusted position;
.It isreadily obvious that when thelower end 'ofthellever is swungupwardly, the
ratchet bar 23 may be raised and when the lever is moved upwardly, the same will cause the members 3 and 4 to move inwardly toward each other, thereby drawing inwardly on the upper ends of the side bars to properly tension the saw blade that is secured between the lower ends of the bars of the buck saw frame in the usual manner. The ratchet teeth'25 wil cooperate with the notched members carried by the tightening member 4 to properly retain the side bars of the buck saw frame in their adjusted relation.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that we have provided a buck saw frame tightener that can be readily and easily attached on the frame of a conventional buck saw and by reason of its simplicity, the tightcner can be efficiently actuated, and the same will not in any way interfere with the use of the buck saw when attached to the upper portions of the side bars of the franie.
Furthermore, a buck saw frame tightener of the above mentioned character can be manufactured at a very low cost and will be strong and durable.
While we have'shown the preferred embodiment ofour invention, it is to be under stood that minor changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be'resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended clainn In combination with the side bars of'a buck saw frame, of a tightening device therefor including a pair of coacting tightening members, one of said members comprising a bar formed at its inner end with a yoke, a loop carried by the outer endiof said bar for engagement over the upper end of one of the side bars, the other member including a pairof spaced bars secured together, a loop carried by the outer ends of said bars for engagement over the upper end of the other side bar, a
' lever pivotally secured at its upper end between the spaced bars adjacent the inner ends thereof, said leverextending downwardly through the yoke on the inner end of the first mentioned bar and being pivotal ly secured therein. whereby said coacting tightening members will be moved simultaneously in oposite directions upon the actuation of the lever, means for locking said tightening members in an adjusted position, said last mentioned means comprising a ratchet bar pivoted at, its lower end to the intermediate portion of the lever,'the upper end of said bar extending upwardly between the spaced bars of one of the tightening mei'nbers, and a notched element secured between said spaced bars with which the teeth of. the ratchet bar cooperate.
