PATENT OFFICE.
ASHLAND, NEBRASKA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDMILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,640, dated November 30, 1875; application filed August 21, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID L. OSBORN, of Ashland, in the county of Saunders and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Windmill, of which the following is a specification The invention consists in vanes hinged by straps to arms that are outwardly inclined from hub, and in the mode of combining arms, rods, and hub-extension, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1. is a side elevation of the wheel and tail-vane, and a section of stand and turn-table. Fig. 2 isaplan view, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation, of the wind-wheel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the wheel-vanes, which are pivoted or hinged to the arms B by straps C, said arms being inclined from the hub outward toward the wind, so that the vanes, being thrown a little to the back of the arms by their hinges, are made both tangential and inclined forward or toward the wind, in a mannor by which the vanes approximate the form of a screw to a greater extent than when arranged exactly radial and in the transverse This forward inclination of the arms also allows of bracing them by the rods D and the extension E of the shaft.
The vanes are connected to the sliding spider F on the wheel-shaft, and this spider is connected by toggle-bars G and H with the elbow-lever I, on thelong arm of which isan adjustable weight, J, which, by this connection, expends its power in keeping the vanes turned sidewise to the wind.
The effect of the bend of the lever I, and the relative arrangement of the connectingrods G H with it, is to increase the resistance of the weight as it rises by increased power of the wind, so that the regulator is graduated to a considerable extent to the force of the wind, making a regulator of great merit.
A cord, K, is attached to the bars G H, and extended down through the hub of the turntable for lifting the weight up when it is desired to stop the wheel.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- B, the latter being inclined outwardly from the hub, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the inclined arms B, rods D, and the extension E of the hub, substantially as specified.
