UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SGREN DAVIDSEN, OF TONSBERG, NORWAY.
REGULATING DEVICE FOR ELECTRODE BOILERS.
Application filed January 21, '1928, Serial No. 248,414, and in Norway February 5, 1927.
My present invention relates to boilers provided with electrodes for heating the water by means of electric energy. Several constructions of such boilers are already known,
wherein the water is utilized as a resistance connecting the electrodes inside the boiler so as to receive heat from the electric current flowing from one electrode through a regulated path of water to another electrode. The
regulation of the boiler is effected by varying the length of water path or paths for the current in dependency of the temperature or pressure within the boiler, said paths being shortened in case the temperature or pressure 5 decreasing beyond a certain minimum and being prolonged in case the temperature or pressure increasing beyond a certain maximum. Such regulation of the length of the vater paths for the current is effected by adjusting the mutual position of the electrodes. The mechanism effecting such adjustment should be of such a nature that a small regulating impulse received from devices under the influence of the boiler temperature or pressure is transferred into a comparatively long travel of the member effecting the adj usimeut of the electrodes proper.
()ne of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and effective transferring device to be inserted between the impulse member and the adjustment member, and which transferring device fulfills the requirements stated above.
Another object oi the present invention is to provide a simple and effective impulse device, i. e. one being under the influence of the boiler conditions and actuating the said impulse member, so as to transmit thereto a taunparatively long impulse travel even at relatively small variations in the conditions (temperature and/or pressure) inside the boiler.
I shall now proceed to describe my invention by way of an illustrating embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawing,
but it should be understood that the invention is not restricted to the constructions shown therein or described hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a plan View of a boiler, partly in section, showing particularly the said transferring device.
Figure 2 shows in elevation a part of a boil partly in vertical section.
Figure 3 is another elevation of parts of the boiler showing partly in section the essential members taking part of the entire regulation.
Figure 4 shows diagrammatically a modified form of the transferring mechanism.
Figure 5 shows another modification.
Inside the ordinary cylindric boiler shell the electrodes 1 and counter-electrodes 2 are arranged. The electrodes 2 are fixedly mounted on bolts 3 attached to the top cover l of the boiler and insulated therefrom. Preferably I use three sets of electrodes 1 angularly displaced at 120 so as to be located symmetrically around the vertical axial line of the boiler (see Figure 1). Each set of electrodes 1 consists of spaced parts directed inwardly (Figure 2), and between them project similar spaced parts of electrode sets 2 which are mounted on a common central bar 5 or spindle mounted rotat-ably in the top cover 4 and bottom cross 6. The electrodes 1 embrace each an angular space of and so do the electrodes 2. Consequently. the latter 2 may be turned in between 1 as shown in the drawing, whereby the water paths for the current from the parts 1 to the parts 2 will be a minimum, consequently the electric energy consumed by the boiler a maximum. Or the electrodes 2 may be rotated through 60 to the position shown in dashand-dot lines in Figure 1, wherein the said paths will be maximum and the consumed energy a minimum. Between these extreme positions the electrodes 2 may be automatically regulated so as to cause at any time the pressure or temperature within the boiler to remain between certain limits.
The adjusting member for the electrodes 2 is shown as an arm 7 attached to the spindle, and the impulse member is shown as a piston rod 8 receiving its motion from a device described more detailed hereinafter.
The transferring device is inserted between the arm 7 and the rod 8 and consists of three links a, b, c. All these links are at one end pivotally connected together as at 9, but their other ends are differently arranged. The other end of link 6 is pivoted as at 10 to the fixed cross 6, that of link 0 is pivoted as at 11 t0 the outer end of arm 7, and that of link as is pivoted as at 12 to the inner end of the rod 8.
If now rod 8 is moved a short distance inwardly, so that its inner pivot 12 takes the position 12 (Figure 1). the common pivot end 9 of link I) must swing about the fixed pivot 10 to the position 10, thereby taking along with it the interconnected ends of links a and 0. Consequently the inner end of link (1 makes a long travel which is transferred to arm 7 the outer pivot 11 of which will thereby take the position 11, wherein this arm 7 has turned the movable set of electrodes 2 through In some cases, particularly in large or high boilers. it may be desirable to cause electrodes 2 arranged in a lower part of the boiler, where the wri lri not so hot, to perform a smaller angular regulating movement than electrodes arranged in the upper part of the boiler. In such case the electrodes 2 may be arranged in groups each group being; adjusted by an arm 7, 7 etc. l iuure 4) of ditl'crent lengths each arm being connected by a separate link 0, 0 etc., to the common pivot c. As will be seen from Figure 1 the end point 11. of arm 7' is swung only to point 11 through a smaller angle than the point 11 of arm 7, hence the two groups of electrodes are adjusted through different angles.
Similar other modifications are included in my invention.
Different groups of electrodes 2 may also be n'xounted on differently located vertica. axes, and in such cases the transferring mechanism will take a corresponding form.
The impulse mechanism effecting the trayel of the rod 8 comprises a closed container arranged inside the boiler and forming part of a closed system filled with a liquid. The container may be a. coil 13 arranged at a suitable level in the boiler and filled for in tance with oil. This coil 13 at the upper end is connected by a pipe 14 to a vertical pipe 15 arranged outside the boiler and conducting down to the rear part of a piston cylinder 16 provided with a. piston 17 for the rod 8 and being also suitably connected with a flexible diaphragm 18. The rod is pulled outwards by a helical spring 19.
If the boiler is intended to heat water to a temperature below 100 C., the coil 13 regulates according); to the temperature. According the latter rises. the oil in coil 13 will be heated and be extended to a larger volume, whereby it is forced partly out into the pipes 14-, 15 and cylinder 16 likewise filled'with oil. Consequently the piston 17 is pressed inwards together ith rod 8 so as to swing electrodes 2 into a position for a lower consumption of electric energy. When a gain the temperature within the boiler sinks. the pressure of oil upon piston 17 is correspondingly relieved. so as to enable spring 19 to retract rod 3 and adjust the electrodes 9 for a higher con urnption of energy.
ln ca e the boiler is used to develop steam at some desired pressure, the temperntin c and /or pressure prevailing within the boiler may cause the automatic adjustment of the electrodes. Figure 5 shows a modification,
wherein the lower end of coil 13 is provided with a flexible end wall constructed as a bellow-like member 20. At a rising pressure within the boiler the walls of bellow 20 will be pressed towards each other, whereby a quantity of oil is forced out into the coil 13 thereby increasing the pressure in cylinder 16 and forcing piston 17 and rod 8 inwards. Consequently the mechanism regulates in dependency of the temperature and pressure conditions combined.
The coil 13 and pipes 14, 15 may also be dispensed with. In this case the rod 8 and cylinder 16 arranged at the right hand side (Figure 3) of point 12 and the spring 19 is made as a compression spring tending to force piston 17 with rod 8 inwards, consequently as before to the left in Figure 3, whereas the diaphragm 18 is pressed outwards by the boiler pressure so as to tend to carry rod 8 outwards (to the right). It will be understood that the container 13 is thereby replaced by the inside portion of cylinder 16 between piston 17 and diaphragm 18, the latter forming a flexible wall instead of the bellow 20.
The system filled with liquid is connected at a suitable place to a device for supply or removal of fluid, for instance a lubricator or a filling aperture 21, in order that the rcgulating device may be adjusted for a certain pressure or a certain temperature in the boiler.
