Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
ARAMONT N. HOLLEMBEAK, OF GENOA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDMILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,564, dated November 30, 1875; application led October 2,1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARAMONT N. Hor.- LEMBEAK, of- Genoa, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmills;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part ot' this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in windmills.
In the drawings, Figure l. is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan View, ofthe mill complete.
The invention consists in a simple and effective construction and mounting of a windwheel, its guide or tail Vane, and their power-communicating devices, whereby the wheel is secure in position and under control.
A represents the .wind-wheel, the axle or driving-shaft B ot' which has its bearings cin a yoke, O. This yoke or frame C is supported on top of the post D by a collar, C1, and adapted by means of this collar to turn freely around said post. E is the guide or tail vane,
.pivoted at the side of the yoke or frame C in bearings c e. The top bearing c of this vane E is in a curved arm or brace, O2, secured at each side to the yoke (l. W is a gravityweight, secured on the end ot' a lever, F, which is pivoted at f to an arm, f', secured to and projecting out from the yoke O. The inner end of this arm j" forms the lower pivot- ,bearing e of the tail-vane E. Secured to the top of the lever F is a chain, G, which is secured at g to the tail-vane E; thenceit passes around friction-rollers o on the arm C2, and is secured to the rods or loop h of the collar g. H is a pedal, which, through the connection of the rod g, is attached to a collar, g', which collar slides on the post D. Arms l1. and connecting-chain G, playing around the pulleys o, connect and operate the guide or tail vane E. I? is the pitman for communicating motion from the wind-wheel to an engine, pump,
or other motor. The wind-wheel A is constructed of two inclosing rims or bands, c c', between which the short oblique blades AZ are placed. A spider-frame, consisting ofthe rods b, which extend from the periphery of the wheel A to the driving-shaft or axle B, connccts the whole together.
The operation is as follows: In the ordinary Working order of the mill it stands in the position shown in Fig. l, the wheel being brought to the wind by the guide or tail vane E. Should it be desired to stop or decrease the ordinary force or speed of' the wheel the pedal H is operated, which, through chain Gr, draws around the tail-vane, and through it causes the wheel A to turn around and present an oblique face to the wind, thus decreasing its speed.
By this arrangement it will be seen a simple and effective mill is obtained, and one that the speed of which can and will at all times be under control, and be regulated at will, it' desired.
The gravity-weight W brings. the tail-vane E back to its original position after the treadle H has been operated and released.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with the brace C2 and friction-rollers 0 thereon, the chain Gr, united at one end to the hand-operating mechanism, and at the other to the tail-vane and gravitylever, as and for the purposes described.
2. In combination with the yoke or frame C G1, the bent arm or brace C2, secured at each end to the top part of the yoke, and provided with friction-rollers o and bearing e for the' tail-vane, as described. 4
3. In combination with the frame or yoke C, the arm f', secured to the frame G, forming the lower pivot-bearingc for the tailvane and pivot-bearing.for the gravity-lever F W, as described.
4. The controlling or guiding mechanism, consisting of lever H, connection g, yoke vy', arms h, chain G, connected to tail-vane and gravity-weight, and pivoted lever gravityweight F W, all constructed, arranged, and adapted to operate substantially as described.
5. The combination, in a windmill, of yoke C, brace C2, and arm f', for supporting the tail-Vane and wind-wheel upon its support, as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
