IMPROVEMENT IN PAD-SADDLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 1 70,559, dated November 30, 1875; application tiled November 6, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SIMON HERB, of Bluffton, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pad-Saddles for Harness; and I do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a view in perspective, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, of the invention.

This invention relates to an improvement in pad-saddles for harness; and consists of a flexible pad-saddle having two separated upwardly flanged and curved metallic plates for the reception of the back strap or band, and for holding the pad-saddle itself in proper shape, held in place between the back-strap and padface by screws and terret shanks passed through the back-strap, metallic plates, and

the pad-face into nuts secured in the pad itself, all of which will hereinafter more fully appear.

Similar letters of reference on the accompanying drawing indicate like parts of the invention.

The upper face of the pad A is composed of a strip, B, of leather, to or beneath which are secured the nuts 0, for the reception of the screws E and the shanks D of the terrets F. The lower leather of the pad A is preferably secured to the strip B by tacking the edges of the former to the top of the latter. Upon the pad-face G are placed the check-hook H and the back strap or band I. The back strap or band I is stitched to the pad-face G on each side of the check-hook H, and the usual screwfastening is passed through the straps I and G and check-hook H, to prevent the latter from being withdrawn. Two metallic plates, K K, curved to conform, in a measure, to the shape of the animals back at the sides, and provided with upwardly-projecting flanges L L, are placed upon the pad-face G, one upon each side of the check-hook H, and at a short entered between the flanges L L of the metal plates K K, and appropriately stitched to the points of the pad-face G. The screws E and terrets F are then driven to place, by passing them, through the holes provided for that purpose in the back-strap I, metallic plates K K, and pad-face'G, into the nuts 0 provided for their reception in the interior of the pad A. i

The operation of the invention is as follows, viz: When placed upon the animals back the pad-A will rest upon the fullest parts, as at a a. On tightening the pad by means of the girth the lower ends or points of the pad'will be drawn toward the animals body. The parts a, a of the pad will act as fulcrums, and cause the bridge or flexible joint 0 to rise upward from the animals spine, thereby bringing'the weight of the saddle on the swells a a of the soft pad A. The plates K K stiffen the saddle, hold it in shape, and yet permit the pad to be soft and pliable, thereby avoiding abrasion or chafing of the animals back.

I am aware that pad-saddles having metallic center caps. to which metallic plates have been connected by metallic joints, are now in use, and I therefore make no claim to a padsaddle having a metallic center, whether flexible or otherwise but What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The flexible pad-saddle, having the separated upwardly-flanged metallic plates for the reception of the back strap or band, and held in place as herein shown and described.
