rlhis invention pertains to bolster reinforcements, and more particularly to braces for bolster or other side bearings.
The present A. R. A. specifications for bolster design requirements, stipulate maxi.- mum stresses with a vertical load acting a certain distance each side of the center of said bolster; also anywhere from the center of the spring support to a fixed point from the center of the bolster. These requirements Were made with a view to insure proper strength of the bolster at the side bearings where the e uivalent of the entire load of one truck may e concentrated due t0 the side roll of the car and the impact consequent to side bearing clearance. It is thereforenecessary to reinforce the topmember of the bolster at the side bearings where some sort of .support is necessary for this comparatively thin section, this being especially true where the said bearings are of the roller type using a single-roller, in which c ase the load is ccncentrated on an extremely limited area. Various methods of reinforcement for the top member directly below the point of the side bearing have been devised but these generally take the form of a. vertical or double web extending vertically between the top and bottom members, which forms have been found to be not entirely satisfactory.
Itis therefore an object of this invention to provide integral bolster reinforcing means disposed to insure proper strength of the bolster at the side bearings.
Another object is to provide side bearing reinforcement which is economical to .manufacture and fulfills all requirements of service and manufacture.
A further object is to provide a reinforcement for side bearings so disposed as to properly distribute loads otherwise concentrated on an extremely limited area of the bearing.
With these and Various other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and operationl as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specification, 'drawings and claims appended hereto.

Referring now more particularly to lFigure 3, the top and bottom webs 18 and 19 of the bolster adjacent the side bearin'g13 may be connected by diagonally disposed brace members 20 of substantially inverted V-type. The corners of these braces are illeted so as also to form a connection as at 21 to the side members 22 of the holsters in order to better distribute the load concentrated on the side bearing. To further strengthen the diagonal members 20, which preferably extend in the direction of the length of the bolster, brackets 23 may be disposed between said webs, forming a connection and brace between them. In some instances, in order to better Iadapt the bolster to bolt hole arrangements, instead of providing the center brackets 23, side brackets 24 (Figure 4) may be provided forming a connection between the side webs'22 and the diagonal braces 20. rThe diagonal braces may be further reinforced by providing side brackets similar to the brackets 24 disposed between the diagonal braces 20 and the side webs 22 (Figure 5) and by forming a connection between the diagonal braces by means of a bracket 26, similar to the bracket 23, disposin the brackets 26 and 25 so that they may either in a line or in staggered relation with respect to each other.
It Will therefore be seen that there has been provided a'bolster construction whichv conforms to the A. R. A. specifications for bolster design and inclu-des reinforcement for a side bearing providing bracing means disposed in the direction of the stresses applied to the. bearing and also providing outer bracing means disposed at an angle to the direction of the application of the stresses for reinforcing the first named bracing means, the side bearing. and the bolster.
It is of course to be understood' that I do not wish to be limited by the exact 'embodiments of the invention shown as other and various modifications Iwill of course occur to those skilled in the art.
I claim: c
1. In a bolster, the combination of side bearings, spring supports, and diagonal bracing means for said side bearings adjacent said sprin sup orts.
2. n a olster, the combination of side bearings, spring braces dis osed 1n the direction of the length of said bo ster for said side bearings adjacent said spring supports. l
3. In a bolster, the combination. of side bearings, spring supports, V-shaped braces disposed in the direction of the length of said l .bolster for said side bearings adjacent said spring supports, and bracing means for said braces disposed transversely of said bolster.
4. In' a bolster, the combination of side bearings, spring supports, V-shaped braces disposed in the direction' of the length of said bolster for said side bearings adjacent said spring supports, and bracing means for said braces disposed transversely of said bolster ,and connecting parts of said bolster and said braces. 5. 'A bolster comprising an upper surface having a portion .for receiving a side bearing, diagonally disposed bracing means for said upper surface reinforcing said portions and extending'to and transmitting the load to other ortions of said bolster.

8. A bolster of substantially rectangular truss construction having a 4portion throughout its length adapted'to receive or serve as a side bearing, a pair of op ositely extending diagonal braces extending om an intermediate portion of the underside of the top web to thelower portionsof the side walls located to reinforce said portion, and transverse webs extending between said braces.
9. :Al bolster of substantially rectangular truss construction having a portion throughout its length adapted to receive or serve as a side bearing, a pair of. op ositely extending diagonal braces extending fiom an intermediate portion of the underside of the top web to the lower portions of the side walls located to reinforce said portions, and transverse webs extending between said braces and side walls of said bolster.
10. A bolster having a top surface and side walls, a portion for receiving side bearing 'stresses on said top surface, racing means for said portion comprising an inverted` V extending from the underside of said top surface to said side walls.
11. A bolster having a top surface and side walls, a portion for receivin side bearing stresses on said top surface, racing means for said portion comprising an inverted V- extending from the underside of said top surface to said side walls, and other bracin means extending between said side walls an first named bracing means. i
