Application'led Getober 2, W26. Seralhlfl'o. 139,222.
rllhe invention relates to means for supportingv the retaining of the sually freight car tion lof the end valve, which forms part brake apparatus ofl Va railway car.
the retainingv valve of a Vvrailway is mounted'upon the upper porof the cant-lie valve casingY Vjecting side ext'ensions,l flanges lor exten- 'being bolted directlyjto theV end ofthe car, with a small ,pipe extending downwardly from the vvalve casingto the airbrake apparatus. in service, this pipe then becomes necessa new length'of pipe.
On account of excessive vibration is apt to snap 'off a The presentinvention seeks to provide a supporting bracket for the retaining valve casing which is holte portion of with means for secur d directly to the vupper the car end and which isprovided ely but adjustably supporting the. valve casing so that in ease the' pipe breaks adjacent the valve casing, the end of the pipe can be ,re-threaded and the valve lowered in position to engage it, thus avoiding the necessity of replacing the entire length of pipe. vid-e a bracket of A further object is to Yprostout construction and one which can be mounted upon old cars by means ofthe retaining bolts now used to hold the retainer valve casing in position. The invention consists'v in the feri'ed form in the features of improvement illustrated in the preand more particularly pointed out` in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Fig. l is a view illu of the present improvement for holding` a restrating the application taining valve in position on the end of a freight cai'.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the improved bracket. Y
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The improved bracket comprises a base portion adapted the car and a seat for outwardly from the ortion having holes to abut against the end of the valve casing spaced base portion, the base at its opposite sides for bolts by which the bracket is secured to the car and the seat having a vertical series of bolt openings at its opposite sides for receiving the bolts by which the valve is adjustably secured in position the bracket. The bolt openings at each side of the bracket have their axes lying in th that the bracket can e saine vertical plane so be readily inserted between the retainer valveoasing'and the car end in cars now in use. j Y The improved bracket, in the preferred form-shown, is U- liaped'in section and is formed of pressed sheet metal. lt comprises a base portion '71 two pairs of outwardlyfprosions 3 extending laterally from the base portion and each arranged between a'pair of the ,i
outwardly projecting'extensions f2, and. two
`flanges teach ofwhich is integral with two of the extensions 2 at one side of the` bracket and extends laterally from the e outer ends thereof. j Obviously the construction canbe yreadily formed from a rectangularpiece voi" suitablev dimensions by slittii'igH Vor shearing it along.linesfcorresponding to i sheet metal of the outlines ofthe extensions or .flanges and v then shaping it to form the side' extensions 2 i 4cured to thebracket, lthese ibolts extendingY through the usual perforated ears l() on the sides of thevalve casing. In case the portion of the pipe?) which extends within the valve broken off, as often happens in servpipe can be rethreaded and in position on the bracket casing is ice, the end of the the casing lowered to engage it.
ln order to permit quite a number of suchV adjustments, the bolt openings or seats S'preferably merge into one another, as most Aclearly v shown in Fig. 2, each seat however being of such shape that it will hold one of the retaining bolts securely in position.l The series of bolt openings or seats in each of the flanges;v e have their axes lying in the saine vertical plane with the axis of the bolt opening 6 in the underlying flange or extension 8. llVith this arrangement the bracket can be readily mounted upon cars now in use by means ofA the saine bolts that are employed for holding the valve casing in position. Y
Obviously, changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the scope of the appended'claims,
