IMPROVEMENT IN BABV-WALKERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,544, dated November 30, 1875; application filed July 26, 1675.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSE GARCIA, of the city, county, and State. of New York, have invented certain Improvements in'Baby-Walkers, of which the following is a specification:

This invention consists in constructing the walker in two parts, hinged or pivoted together, so as to enable it to be opened for the reception of the child, and to be closed and fastened around the child also, with a ringshaped footplate, combining the legs to gether, and providing it with a large circular base, to prevent its tipping over; also, in furnishing it with a seat upon its top, with fast.

In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a baby-walker constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view,

Fig. 4 shows a similar view, with the walker open, ready for the reception of the child. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section of the breastpiece and its guides separated. Fig. 6 represents the rear portion of the seat, with its fastening.

In each of the views similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts wherever they occur.

A represents the breast-piece; B, the footplate, which has four casters, 0 O O O, on the under side, to enable the device tobe readily moved about over the floor. D D D D represent the legs of the walker, and E the chair-seat, which is made separate and secured upon the upper side of the breast-piece by means of hooks F, attached to the said seat, which pass over the studs G G, projecting from the edge of the breast-piece.

The seat E is readily detached from the device, when the same is to be used as a walker, by unlocking the hooks F from the studs G.

Both the foot-plate and the breast-piece are vertically divided, from rear to front, into two equal parts, connected at the rear by a pivot, H, which forms a hinge, I, to allow the two parts to open sufficiently to receive the child.

By releasing the set-screws N N of both slides L L, the breast-piece can be raised or lowered and properly adjusted under the arms of the child, to cause the device to bear a portion of its weight, and thereby facilitate the childs learning to walk.

To look the forwardends of the breastpieces and footpieces, I employ the hook P or R, attached to one of said pieces, which passes over a stud, Q or S, on the other piece.

By means of the foot-plate B the legs D are firmly combined, and said plate, having a circular periphery and extending beyond the legs, prevents the device from tipping over.

Springs may be employed over the rods K K, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the walker can be used as a baby-jumper, or the breastpiece be made to yield to the motions of the child.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-

1. The vertically-divided breast-piece A and vertically-divided footpiece B, in combination with the cross-pieces J J and legs D- D, and provided with the pivots H H and fastenings P Q and R S, substantially as and for the purposes herein described.
