COMBINATION AIRSHIP AND AEBJOPLALN E.
Application filed February 29, 1928. Serial No. 257,967.
This invention, relates to flying-machines of the heavier than air type whichmakes use of as-carr ing facilities.
ne of t e objects of this invention is to provide longitudinally disposed planes de signed to embody cabins.
Another object is to arrange cabins within a plane.
Another object is to provide a gas-holding structure in combination with transversely and longitudinally disposed planes.
Another object is ,to arrange transversely disposed carrying planes between the gasholding structure and the cabin-holdlng lower planes.
Other objects will appear from the followas from the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a combination airship. and aeroplane structure embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the combination structure illustrated in Fig. 1.
According to the principal feature of this invention, a fuselage is eliminated and a portion of the plane structure is hollow and de-. signed to 'hold cabins for passengers and other requirements. e
The longitudinally disposed portions of the planes are preferably utilized for this purpose.
As illustrated in the drawing, the longitudinally disposed plane portion is arranged in the lower partof the combination structure. This longitudinally disposed plane portion is inform of transversely arched portions 3 and 4, forming two longitudinally disposed air channels 5 parallel to the longitudinal axis of the whole structure. This longitudinally disposed plane structure is of a suitable thickness in order that its hollow space may be utilized for cabins and other purposes commonlyarranged in a fuselage.
This. longitudinally disposed plane structureis firmly connected to transversely disposed plane structures 6 and 7 by means of upright, comparatively narrow passageway structures 8.
Above the transverse planes 6 and 7 a gasholding structure 9 is arranged and interconnected with the plane structures.
Motors 10 are provided at various suitable points in-the whole structure.
This invention providesa structure which facilitates a slow and comfortable landing by means of the gas-carrying structure 9.
- The whole arrangement assures a high degree of safety since the comparatively large, transversely disposed'planes 6 and 7 are between the gas-holding structure 9 and the cabin-carrying plane structure 34.
.In an emergency case it is possible to maintain this structure in the air even if the gascarrying structure should explode or otherwise be damaged. Plane structures 34: and
carrying surfaces without the gas structure 9. Especially the longitudinally disposed plane structure 3-4 is intended to provide a suitably large carrying surface in addition to the carrying surfaces of the transversely disposed planes 6 and 7.
1I-Iavingthus described my invention, I c aim:
1. In a structure of thecl'ass described, a longitudinally disposed plane .plane structure, transversely disposed plane structures spaced above and connected to the first-named plane structure, and a gas-holding structure spaced above and connected to the previously named plane structures.
3. In a structure of the class described, a cabin-embodying longitudinally disposed plane structure, transverselydisposed plane structures spaced above and connected to the first-named plane structure, and a gas-holding structure spaced above and connected to the previously named plane structures, and comparatively narrow upright passageway structures between the plane structure and the transversely disposed plane structures adapted to form the communicating means therebctween.
4,. In a structure of the class described, a cabin-embodying longitudinally disposed plane structure, transversely disposed plane structures spaced above and connected to the first-named plane structure, a gas-holding structure spaced above and connected to the previously named plane structures, and driving means at suitable points of the structure.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name.
