HEMOSTA'IIC INSTRUMENT. p
Application filed ApriI 25,
My invention relates to improvements in hemostatic instruments. v
The object of my. invention is to provide a novel hemostatic instrument, which is simple, cheap, durable, not likely to get out of order, which can be very quickly applied and released, and. with which an arm or leg of a person may be held tightly compressed, for the purpose of arresting a hemorrhage therefrom, or to check the return flow of the blood through th'e venous system without materially checking the arterial flow, whereby the veins Wlll be enlarged enabling the easy introduction there into of a hypodermic needle or trocar for the administration directly into the blood stream of medicines-Serums, vaccines, etc.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
I similar parts in thedifferent views.
My improved instrument may embody the r usual type of hemostat having two members l and 2 respectively provided with jaws 3 and 4, and handles 5 and 6. The handle 6 has a lateral extension 7 having a tooth 8 adapted to releasably engage teeth 9 of a lateral projection 10 on the handle 5. The members 1 and 2 are pivotally connected, after the manner of shears,by a screw 11.
A compressing member, which is flex ible, and, preferably, resilient, such as a rubber tube 12 is fastened at one end to the, jaw 3. Such fastening means for the tube 12 consists in fitting one end of the tube on the jaw 3 and having the tube extend past the screw 11 onto the handle'5, the screw 11 being removed together with the member 2,
for this purpose. 7 p I I The tube 12' hasin one side a notch 13 which is adapted to receive the member 2. and which permits the latter to swing on the screw 11. After the tube 12 is fitted 1928. Serial No. 272,760.
on-the'linembc'r Lethe member .2 is replaced and fastened to the member 1 by' the,
screw 11. v
In the operation of the invention, the jaws 3 and -4 are opened, and the tube is wound tightly around the arm or leg to be compressed and the tube then inserted between the jaws 8 and 4, the handles 5 and 6 being then forced toward each other and the tooth 8 engaged with one of the teeth 9, thus releasably securely holding the jaws 25 and tightly-clamping the tightly drawn tube 12 and forming a tourniquet'of the latter. I
hen it is'desired to remove the tourniquet,-the handles 5 and 6 are released from each other, upon which the'tube 12 will be released from the jaws 3 and l. I I
The arrangement is such that the instrument easily operable, andafter being applied to the limb, it will securely hold the without. the attention same compressed thereafter of the operator and without danger of accidentally belng released.
cations, within the scope of the appended I donot limit my invention to the struc ture shown and described, as'many modifi-' claims, may be made without departing v i'rom 'thespirit of my invention.
What Iclaim is I 1. In a hemostatic instrument, the combi nation with two members pivotedto each other and having cooperating jaws and handles and provided with means for releasably locking the handles tov hold the jaws in a clamping position, of a flexible member attached to one of said jaws and adapted to encircle and compress a portion of a persons body and to beheld releasably clamped between said jaws.
2. In ahemostatic instrument, the combie I nation with two'members pivoted to each other and having cooperating jaws and handles and provided with means for releasably locking the handles'to hold the jaws in a clamping position, of .a resilient member attached to one of said jaws and adapted to encircle and compress a portion of" a persons body and adapted to beheld releasably clamped between said jaws.
3. In a hemostatic instrument, the combination with two members pivoted to each other and having cooperating jaws and" 110 .leasab ly locking the handles to hold. the lJ2tWS ma. clamp ngposition of a rubber] handles and provided with means for re- 'jaws in wvclemping position, of a rubber" tube having one end fitted on the jaw of one of said members and extending past the pivotal point andonto the handle thereof, and having a lateral notch in which the other member is disposed,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to thisspecification.
' f ones ,0. SALLEY.
