Description

I W. J. "LEWIS.
'THE MANUFACTURE OF CLEVIS-PINS. .N 170 481 Patented Nov.30,18'75.
Wqrzsmzgw hvEqliz MPEI'EBS, PPKYI'O-LITHOGRAFHER, WASNXNGYON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. LEWIS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF CLEVlS-PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,481, dated November 30, 1875; application filed October 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. LEwIs, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Olevis Bolt or Pin;
' and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the rolls. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the blank enlarged.
Like letters refer to like parts Wherever they occur.
My invention relates to the manufacture of clevis-pins and similar articles; and it consists, first, in forming a clevis-pin by rolling a blank of round iron having a flu or web along its whole length, and then subjecting the blank so formed to dies, which stave up the head, and swage in or out 0E such portions of the longitudinal web as are not required in the finished article; second, in the rolls for producing the blank, the same being provided with round and oval grooves, with offsets for producing the web or fin upon the blank.
In the drawing, A is the blank. It is a rod of wrought-iron, which has been reduced in the rolls, sov as to leave a continuous web or fin, a, along its entire length. In producing this blank I employ a pair of rolls, B O, mounted in suitable housings, said rolls being grooved, as at b 0 and b c. The first grooves 11 cform an oval, and are provided with an offset, d, formed by collars on, or shoulders in, the rolls B O. The second grooves 12 0 form a circle, broken by an offset or recess, 0, preferably formed in one of the rolls.
jecting it to dies, which swage up the head and swage in or cut off such portions of the web a as are not required in the finished artiole. The same or separate dies may be employed for staving up the head and swaging in or cutting off the Web.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. As an improvement in the manufacture of clevis-pins, the combination of the following steps: first, rolling a rod or bar with-a longitudinal web or fin; and, secondly, staving up the blank to form the head of the pin, and cutting off or swaging in those portions of the web not required in finished article by means of suitable dies, substantially as specified.
2. The rolls B 0, provided with the grooves 12 c d, substantially as specified.
3. The rolls B 0, provided withthe grooves 12 c e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I, the said WILLIAM J. LEWIS, have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM J. LEWIS.
