IMPROVEMENT IN HOSE-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,457, dated November 30, 1875; application filed February 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STILLMAN WHITE, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings; and 1 do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing making a part of the same, is a 'full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure l is a view of my improved coupling. Fig. 2 is a section of same.
The object of my invention is to so construct the coupling that the hose may be more securely attached thereto, and at the same time require less labor in its manufacture than those now in use, and consists in the improvements hereinafter described.
A is the swivel or female end of the coupling, which is attached to and rotates upon the collar B. The male end of the coupling, 0 and the collar D are cast together in one solid piece, the former having a screw-thread upon its outer circumference, corresponding to the screw-thread upon the inner circumference of the swivel A. The collars B and D are provided with spiral grooves or corrugations upon their inner circumference. Upon the inside of the collar B is a band, E, having an annular rim or lip, which rests upon the inner edge of the collar, and prevents it from slipping outward, while a similar band, F, extends through the male end 0 of the coupling and collar D, and is prevented from sliding outward by a rim or lip resting upon the inner edge of the male endU of the coupling in like manner.
The bands E and Fmay, however, be made without the rims or lips, and will be securely held in place after the hose is put in, as hereinafter described.
The bands E and F converge slightly toward the outer ends, and have spiral grooves or corrugations upon their outer circumferences, corresponding to those upon the inner circumferences of the collars B and D. Into the space between the collars and the bands the hose G is inserted when the converging bands are expanded, thus firmly securing the hose 'so it cannot be pulled out.
In my invention, as described, the collars B and D, being attached to the swivel or female end ofthe coupling A and the male end 0 of the coupling, respectively, cannot slip 01f with the hose from the bands E and F, as is often the case with those of different construc- .tion, while much labor is saved in their manu- Witnesses WALTER B. VINCENT, Joe. '1. RICE.
